(picture of couple included) One of the happiest events recorded in the history of the classic little village of Antrim took place Saturday, October 20th, the occasion being the jubilee celebration of the golden Wedding of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Maddin. They day was ideal for a wedding day, the soft light of the Indian summer lending its blessing to the scene and casting about a real romance which even the day of Fifty years ago could not surpass. Seventy-five guests consisting of the children, grandchildren, all of whom are living, with life long neighbors and friends were present each family bringing its dinner. After the repast, which was a special feature in itself, Rev. W. R. McMunn took charge of the exercises, and the following program was greatly enjoyed by the crowd assembled in the parlors: Scripture reading, Psalm 91 by Rev. G. G. Copeland; prayer, Rev. W. R. McMunn remarks and presentation of the presents by Mr. McMunn; remarks by Mr. Copeland; recitation "Fifty Years of Wedded Life" Mary Tidrick; short history of the couple, Mrs. S. H. Tidrick; recitation by Jennie Maddin; short talk, S. L. Maddin; recitation, Kate English; original poem, W. D. Deselm. After this program, Chairman McMunn called for voluntary remarks and Mr. Maddin, the bridegroom of the half a century, first rose. He said in part that to look ahead 50 years seemed a long time, but to those present who could look back over fifty, it seemed short. He called the attention of those present to the fact that he and his bride of fifty summers were now sitting on the same settee upon which they had sat fifty years ago while receiving congratulations, and that the linen used at dinner was the same used on the wedding day. After extending cordial greetings in the way that the aged father alone could do, and thanking the three children for the presents given, he feelingly closed his remarks by kindly admonishing those present to lead a Christian life and warned them that "They who sow to the flesh shall reap corruption, and they who sow to the wind shall reap the whirlwind." He said that he was thankful for a good hope and of an abundant entrance. Mrs. Maddin was then called, but asked to be excused from responding saying that she could not without giving away to her feelings. And everybody understood. Remarks appropriate were made by Bennett Harding, Joseph Valentine, Wm. S. Logan, Wm. C. Milligan, Wm. Lindsey, W. Ralston, Albert Mack, W. W. Brown, and others. The presents were a gold headed cane with the initial "M" and the dates 1856-1906 engraved on the handle, presented to Mr. Maddin and to his wife, a beautiful ring, a brooch, both given by the three children, and a gold dollar bearing a date close to that of their marriage, given by Mr. and Mrs. Bennett Harding who themselves celebrated their golden wedding about one year ago. A. E. Drusedow, the Cambridge photographer, was present and took three groups. The first consisted the aged couple, their three children, the grandchildren and great-grandchildren, 26 in all; the second of four generations present and third a complete group of all present. The good wishes of all were warmly extended by every guest and relative as the time for departure came. Robert Maddin was born in Londonderry County, Ireland July 3rd 1830 and came to America at the age of two and moved with his father to Antrim, his present home. His mother died three days after their arrival and his uncle Robert Maddin took him with whom his life was spent until marriage at the age of 26. Martha Lindsey was born August 30th, 1836 near Antrim and has spent her life there. She was married by Dr. Samuel Findley at her home and their children consist of two daughters and son, namely, Mrs. J. G. Logan, Mrs. S. H. Tidrick and S. L. Maddin.
