I would have thought they would have sent the obituary earlier than May. Newspapers clippings are all dated Jan 1940. LAST RITES FOR BATTLE CREEK PIONEER WOMAN Mrs. Martha Volk Laid at Rest in Family Lot at Union Cemetery Had Been Prominent in the Battle Creek Community for Fifty Years. Funeral Services for Mrs. Martha Volk, who died last Thursday morning at the home of her son, George Volk, southeast of Battle Creek were held Saturday afternoon at the Methodist church in Battle Creek with Rev. Walter L. Jewett of the First Methodist church of Norfolk in charge. Burial was in the family lot at Union cemetery. Pallbearers were six nephews: Leonard and Leroy Horn of Tilden, Charles Volk of Meadow Grove, and Albert Praeuner, Ed Volk and Walter Praeuner, Battle Creek. At the time of her passing, Mrs. Volk had reached the age of 69 years, 5 months, and 24 days. Born Martha Lydia Horn, eldest daughter of William and Christina Horn at Grand Ridge, Illinois, Aug. 24, 1870, she grew to womanhood there and was confirmed in the German Methodist church near her home. At the age of eighteen years she came to Nebraska and kept house for her two brothers who had located in Fairview precinct, Madison county. She was married to Frederick George Volk on November 22, 1890 and the couple occupied a farm in Fairview precinct until two years later when they purchased the home farm six miles southeast of Battle Creek where she lived until the later part of November, when ill health compelled her to abandon her home to receive proper attention at the home of her son, George. Though quiet and unassuming, Mrs. Volk made lasting friends of neighbors who had known her for over a half a century and her untimely passing removed another pioneer woman whose door in the earlier years was always open to the weary and or unfortunate traveler. Mrs. Volk is survived by her two sons, Elmer and George of Battle Creek and seven grandchildren. Two sisters, Mrs. William Bedei and Mrs. W.M. Morrison, live in Illinois, and there are two brothers, Herman Horn of Grand Ridge, Illinois, and Albert Horn of Tilden. Surviving her also are her step-mother, Mrs. Minna Horn, two half-sisters, Mrs. Elmer Carlson and Louise Horn, and one half-brother, Edward Horn, all of Ottawa, Illinois.
