In 1871 the family came to Nebraska locating at Union in Cass County. The young couple... Read More	YATES, MARTHA MARGARET—Martha Margaret Brown, daughter of James Edward and Henrietta McCaflin Brown, was born in Gallia County, Ohio, January 18, 1864. In 1871 the family came to Nebraska locating at Union in Cass County. In March, 1873, the mother died and the following spring the father brought his family to Fillmore County, establishing a home in Glengary Township. As the deceased grew to womanhood, she early took upon herself the responsibility of earning her own way in life. August 29, 1882, she was united in marriage to Edward T. Yates of Geneva. The young couple lived in Fairmont until March 18, 1883, when they moved to a farm three miles south of Geneva, which had since been her home. To this union were born eight children, Eugene B., at home; Joseph of Julesburg, Col.; Clare of Albany, Ore.; Della M. McPherren, who died September 22, 1942; Ethel, who died at the age of nine months; Dr. Edith Ridpath of Geneva; Dr. Howard of Hebron; and Lura Rivett of Santa Cruz, Cal. Mr. Yates passed away April 15, 1917. Despite her own large family and many cares, Mrs. Yates always found time to help others in those early days when neighbors were counted by their need, not distance. Only those who have lived in this state through nearly the entire time of its statehood can appreciate what the lives of its pioneers have been. Mrs. Yates confessed Christ early in life and was one of the earliest members of the Christian Church in Geneva, remaining faithful until the end. She was a faithful attendant as long as health permitted, and a zealous worker for her Lord. She was anxious to see the church building restored, and services resumed. She loved her home and her great joy was in caring for it as long as she was able. Even during the last few days she performed some of the household duties. Her health having failed during the past months, she was brought Sunday, to the home of her daughter Edith, in Geneva, where she passed peacefully away Tuesday morning, April 25, 1944, having reached the age of 80 years, 3 months and 7 days. She will be sadly missed by all who knew her, but her life will live on in the lives of her family until they meet her again over there. Mrs. Yates was the last of her family, her brother, John S. Brown of Ohiowa, having died just two weeks previously. Besides her six children, she is survived by three sons-in-law; two daughters-in-law; sixteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, one uncle, John Brown of Ohio; two step-brothers, C. W. Steele of Omaha and I. C. Steele of Ohiowa, three sisters-in-law, Mrs. Christena Yates of San Diego, Cal.; Mrs. Jennie Brown of Ordnance, Idaho; and Mrs. J. S. Brown of Ohiowa; five nieces and nephews, several cousins and many friends. Several grandsons are in the service, and Grandma earnestly prayed to see them safely home. Funeral services were held at the Hrubesky Funeral Home in Geneva at 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 28. G. R. Miller of the York Christian Church officiated. Interment was in the Geneva Cemetery. Clare and Leona were married September 11, 1912. Clare was born September 3, 1887, and died January 28, 1965. Clare's ashes were scattered in the Pacific Ocean.
