Description	:	Martha was raised 14 miles north of Beulah on the family farm and shared a tiny two-room house with her parents and three sisters and spoke German as her first language. Martha attended rural school and was confirmed in German at the Kronthal Church north of Beulah April 13, 1930. Martha married Theodore Heihn at the Kronthal Church on August 23, l936 and they lived in Beulah. Martha was a skilled seamstress well-known for sewing for many weddings. Martha attended rural school and was confirmed in German at the Kronthal Church north of Beulah April 13, 1930. Martha married Theodore Heihn at the Kronthal Church on August 23, l936 and they lived in Beulah. Martha was a skilled seamstress well-known for sewing for many weddings. In l962, Martha began working at the Beulah Community Nursing Home and was a Charter Member of their 1st Grey Lady Volunteers. Prior to her death, she was the only “remaining” Charter member. In l965, Martha became Administrator for the Beulah Joachim Memorial Home where she worked for 17 years until retiring in 1982. During her management, Martha started a rummage sale to raise money for activities for the residents. When the Memorial Home merged with Knife River Care Center, Martha and Ted continued this rummage sale at their home for seven years with all proceeds going to the Knife River Care Center and Mercer County Historical Society. Martha was instrumental in working with the Beulah Senior Citizens to purchase the Joachim Memorial Home and was asked to organize the Beulah Senior Citizen's Rummage Sale to help financially support that facility. This rummage sale blossomed into a full-time business and Martha volunteered her management abilities there for 20 years, working four days a week until she retired at age 93. Martha’s journey through life has been full and complete. After losing two daughters, Janice at 18 and Caroline at 35, Martha chose to live a joyful life with a strong faith in God. She was a woman before her time…liberated and self-taught. She loved studying her German-Russian heritage; reading; crocheting, quilting and sewed many layettes for her church until age 93. Martha’s dream as a young girl was to be a teacher and she fulfilled that teaching those around her patience, love and understanding. Martha was well-known in the community and was greeted wherever she went. She was a member of Nursing Home Grey Ladies, Eagles Auxiliary, Homemakers, West River Bus Coordinator, Beulah Senior Citizen's, Charter Member of Mercer Co. Historical Society, Zion Lutheran Church and ALCW of Beulah which was very close to her heart for over 70 years. In her 96 years, she knew happiness and sorrow; she grew in grace and left a legacy and example for her family to follow. She took pride in her family and grandchildren and was always there to help and guide them. Her thoughtful advice and legacy will carry on for generations.
