Read More	Mrs. E. E. Gates Died Last Friday Mrs. Ernest E. Gates dies at her home four and a half miles west of Canova last Friday morning at ten o'clock. She had undergone an operation in a Mitchell hospital about a month ago and returned home the Sunday preceding her death, apparently on the way to complete recovery. Martha Mathilda Prakel was born at Canova on November 13, 1883, a daughter of Mr. And Mrs. Louis Prakel, and was a life-long resident of this community, passing away at the age of 51 years, 1 month and 29 days. On December 7, 1904 she was united in marriage to Ernest E. Gates at Parker. Five children were born to this union, two of whom, Clarence and Melvin, passed away in infancy. She is survived by her loving husband and three sons, Walter L., Lyle W., and Raymond, and three grandchildren. Others to mourn her death are five sisters, Mrs. Arvid Hamelstrom or Olga, N. D., Mrs. Hugh Williams of Streeter, N. D., Mrs. Conrad Hirchert of Rapid City, Mrs. John Gates of Hazelton, N. D., Mrs. Elmer Sturdevant of Roswell and three brothers, John C. and Henry N., of Canova, and George J., of Inglewood, Calif. In early childhood Mrs. Gates was baptized and confirmed as a member of the Lutheran church and died in this faith. She was a happy, ambitious and industrious woman, a devoted wife, a loving mother and a kind neighbor. The entire community mourns her death and joins in extending sympathy to the bereft family and relatives. The funeral was held Monday afternoon at the local Congregational church with the Rev. F. W. Spieler, pastor of the South of Town Lutheran Church, conducting the services. Rev. Spieler preached a comforting sermon from the text found in Gen. 24:56. His theme was, "At the casket of your departed mother, thank God for what he has done through her for you." A quartet consisting of Mrs. J. E. McNamee, Mrs. Erik Erikson, jr., F. V. Stephens and C. R. Forsberg, with Miss Mabel Strobel as accompanist, sang. Burial was in the Canova cemetery. Pallbearers were: Henry Lueth, Oscar A. Wick, M. H. Loudenberg, F. N. Oswald, Arthur Gossmire and W. F. Scherholz. The following relatives from a distance were here to attend the funeral: Mr. And Mrs. John Gates and son Ray of Hazelton, N. D., Mr. And Mrs. Hugh Williams of Streeter, N. D., Mr. And Mrs. Conrad Hirchert and son Herbert of Rapid City, Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Gates of Worthington, Minn., Mr. and Mrs. Ted Gates of Madison, Mr. and Mrs. John Strichertz and daughter Alberta and Mrs. Melvin Ball of Sioux Falls, and Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Walker of Virgil.
