Description	:	These notes were taken from the " Fountain Inn Tribune" published on May 7th,1942. The writer was a descendant of Robert Gilliland b. 2/18/1796. The article states that this Robert Gilliland is the founder of the American Branch of our family, he was born in Ireland and died in Laurens CO.,SC. on 4/8/1879. He married Martha Robinson born in Scotland and died in Laurens CO. 11/17/1869 at age 70. In Samuels will he mentions his wife Jane and his relative and friend Robert Gilliland.) With that said I feel this is correct. The article goes on to say that many of their decendants are buried at New Harmony Churchyard, Laurens CO.,SC. Also that on the trip over from Ireland one of Robertand Marthas children died shipboard and was buried at sea. Landing at Charleston they came to Duncans Creek which is now Laurens CO., near historic Bethany Pres. Church. A few years later they moved to Rabun Creek near the present day town of Fountain Inn. The old home still stands ( in 1942 )and is known as the " Lee Nash Place " south of Fountain Inn. Originally it was 1800 acres purchased from a man named Kearnes who received it as a land grant from King George of England @ 25 cents an acre $ 450.00. Lewis Gilliland in the article says a slave named Dinah planted the poplar trees in 1853 and they were still standing in 1942... Please contact me if you see errors or I need to give you credit.
