The funeral service will be conducted at the Fairview Congregational Church Thursday morning at 10:30 o'clock. Interment will follow at the Old Fairview Cemetery. The un-looked for departure of Mrs. Martha Joss, from time to eternity, is casting a deep gloom and a feeling of loneliness all over the community of Walnut township, where she was so well and favorably known. To her children she was a devoted, faithful and wise mother. Based upon the foundation Rock of Christianity, she instilled in them three enduring, elevating principles: honest industry, ready obedience, and enabling temperance. She was well named "Martha", and was truly a person to minister and to serve, serving not only her husband, her children, her relatives and friends, but also strangers who were in need. In return she was loved and revered by each of her noble children. Above all, she was a devoted Christian, as a follower of the meek and lowly Jesus. For a full copy of this obituary, please contact the Morrill Public Library of Hiawatha, Kansas, and mention the name and date of the newspaper as shown above. * * * * * * * Mrs. Martha Joss, whose maiden name was Robinett, was born near Middleton, Holmes County, Ohio, July 24, 1835. She was one of three children, and is survived by her sister, Mrs. A. M. Irwin, of Fairview, the third child, a brother, having died in childhood. Mrs. Joss was united in marriage to Mr. Gotlieb Joss, near Winesburg, Ohio, May 24, 1852, and during the first years of married life they made their home in Winesberg. They then moved to Wisconsin, where they remained one year. In 1859 they came to Leavenworth (Kansas), but in 1864, came to Brown County, Kansas, which continued to be their home until they each were called to the great beyond. Here, where the deprivations and hardships of frontier life made many demands upon fortitude and courage, Mr. and Mrs. Joss chose to rear their family, and were charter members of the Old Fairview Congregational Church, which was organized in 1872, and with this church she continued her membership until she transferred it to the Plymouth Congregational Church of Fairview. Mrs. Joss was the mother of 13 children, four of whom died in childhood. The surviving children are all married and prosperous. Fred Joss lives on his fine farm near Sabetha. Charles Joss and George Joss have their farm homes near Fairview. J.F. Joss is the well known hardware and furniture merchant of Fairview. Dr. W. I. Joss is located in Philadelphia, Pa., and Edward C. Joss is in the government employ at Tacoma, Washington. Dr. Jesse Joss has recently located in Fairview. Mrs. E. L. Adams, for a number of years was a prominent teacher in Brown County and now lives in Oswego, Kansas. The youngest member of the family is the wife of Dr. Edgar Thawley, of Peoria, Illinois. All of the members of the family were present, excepting Dr. Thawley, whose illness prevented his coming, and two of the grandchildren. Her seven sons, and son-in-law Mr. Adams, acted as bearers, and bore the casket to the last resting place. ----------------------------------- {All of the above was provided by Paula.}
