Martha was the daughter of Joseph Sherman and Elizabeth Winship of Watertown, Mass., and was baptized there on 1 Sep 1689. Her brother, William Sherman, was the father of Roger Sherman, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and other great state papers associated with the founding of the United States. Martha was married about 1709 to Rev. Benjamin Shattuck, the son of William Shattuck and Susanna Randall of Watertown. It appears that she was married about the time of her husband's graduation from Harvard College in 1709, and they began raising their family in Watertown. Their first four children were born there, but about 1716 they moved to Littleton, Mass. where their remaining seven children were born, and where her husband was installed as the first minister in the town. One genealogical conundrum that exists with her husband is that there was a contemporary Benjamin Shattuck, son of Philp, also born in Watertown, with similar birth and death years. This other Benjamin lived in Cambridge, Mass., and was a constable there, and has surviving probate records dated in 1767. Children of Benjamin and Martha Shattuck, first four b. Watertown, remainder born Littleton: * Stephen, b. 10 Feb 1709/10, buried Templeton, Worcester, Mass. 4 July 1801, m. 1734 Elizabeth ROBBINS. Web sources give Elizabeth a death year of 1788, without reference, and no birth record or parents for her have been confirmed. Stephen's name is included on a memorial plaque in the Common Burial Ground in Templeton. Stephen and Elizabeth had five known children, born at Littleton 1736 to 1749. * Martha, b. 7 Jan 1711/2, d. Littleton 5 Oct 1768, m. 1729 Samuel TUTTLE, b. Ipswich, Mass. 19 May 1709, d. Littleton 11 Dec 1780, son of Simon Tuttle and Mary Rogers. Martha and Samuel both have grave markers in the Littleton Old Burying Ground. They had nine children, born c. 1730 to 1744. * Benjamin, b. 8 Dec 1713, d. Groton, Grafton Co., NH Oct 1790, m. Littleton 13 Nov 1740 Dinah HUNT, b. c. 1713, d. Littleton 17 May 1791, aged 78. Benjamin and Dinah had five known children, born 1741 to 1751. Because Dinah was aged 27 upon her marriage to Benjamin, the question arises as to whether she had been previously married. Samuel and Dinah Hunt of Littleton had four children together before Samuel died in 1739. It appears quite plausible, then, that Dinah is the widow of Samuel Hunt. * Timothy, b. c. 1715, d. North Haven, CT c. 1776, m. Middletown, CT 5 Nov 1740 Desire HALL, b. Wallingford, CT 19 June 1719, daughter of Nathaniel Hall and Elizabeth Curtis. They had seven children whose births were recorded in Middletown 1741-1756. * William, b. 1 Jan 1717/8, d. Jaffrey, Cheshire, NH Jan 1806, aged 88, m. Littleton 1750 Abigail REED, b. Lexington, Mass. 2 April 1731, d. Bethlehem, Grafton, NH Feb 1820, "aged 87.," daughter of Peter Reed and Abigail Blodgett. William and Abigail had eight children, born c. 1753 to c. 1770. There are many Shattucks buried in the Old Burying Ground in Jaffrey, but of a later generation, and William is not listed. * Sarah, b. 13 Dec 1719, m. 30 Sep 1739 Jonathan DIX and with him had 12 children. * Ebenezer, b. 22 Feb 1721/2 * Susanna, b. 8 April 1724, d. Lunenburg, Mass. 25 Sep 1789, m. Littleton 22 Jan 1750 Caleb TAYLOR, b. Littleton 23 May 1724, d. Lunenburg 27 Aug 1791, aged 67y 5m 3d. Susanna and Caleb both have grave markers in the North Cemetery in Lunenburg. Despite the calculation from Caleb's age at death, the record of his birth in the Littleton records gives the date as 23 May. They had four known children born 1751 to 1763. * Elizabeth, b. 13 Feb 1725/6, d. Littleton 1 Dec 1808, m. 26 Feb 1746 Elias TAYLOR, b. Littleton 23 Feb 1722, d. Littleton 21 Nov 1797, son of Caleb Taylor and Mary Witt. They both have grave markers in the Littleton Old Burying Ground. They had six known children born 1747 to 1760. * Jonathan, b. July 1728, d. 19 Feb 1744/5, aged 16y 7m, has a grave marker in the Littleton Old Burying Ground. * Moses, b. June 1733, d. 13 Dec 1737, aged 4y 6m, has a grave marker in the Littleton Old Burying Ground.
