From the Nemaha County Herald, Sept. 1, 1949: Mrs. Ernest Holthus, 73, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Robert Volker was born Feb. 23, 1876 in West Benton Precinct, in this county, and passed away Friday, Aug. 26. In infancy, she was baptized, and on Palm Sunday 1890 was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at the old Stone church gy Rev. J.H. Dirks, who later performed their marriage rites. Her youth was spent on the farm at the home of her parents. On Sept. 9, 1897, she was united in marriage to Ernest Holthus. This union was blessed with a daughter and a son. Mrs. Holthus has been a member of the Martin Luther congregation for many years where she has taken an active part. Besides being a devoted wife and mother, Mrs. Holthus was highly respected in the community. She was possessed of a sincere, cheerful and pleasant personality, which won for her many friends. Although in poor health for a number of years, her condition became more serious a few weeks ago. After a period of confinement in a local hospital, during which improvement in her condition was noted, she was taken to the home of her sister, Miss Anna Volker of Johnson, where she was tenderly cared for until her condition necessitated her return to the hospital, where she passed away . She is survived by her husband; a daughter, Mrs. Henry Moeller of Auburn; one son, Henry Holthus of Auburn; one brother, Robert of Idaho; four sisters, Miss Anna Volker, Johnson, Mrs. Minnie Woerlen, Sarcoxie, MO. Mrs. Theresa Bohling, Auburn and Mrs. Clara Folkerts. Funeral services were held Tuesday, Aug. 30 with a prayer by Rev. Wm. Freuhling at the Casey Funeral Home, followed by services at the Martin Luther Church at 2:00p.m. Pallbearers were Herman Bruggemann, Julius Rademacher, Martin Fass, Henry Schuette, Carl Behrends and Henry Fass. Those in charge of the flowers were Mrs. Norman Rademacher and Mrs. Herman Eden. Interment was made in the Martin Luther Cemetery.
