Highland Recorder March 24, 1922 McDowell News: Mattie Virginia Leach, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Mayberry Leach, died Sunday night at the home of her aunt, Mrs. Gideon Propst. Mattie was fourteen years old and was spending the winter with her aunt so she could attend school. Her parents live on the Cowpasture and her body will be taken there tomorrow for burial. The newspaper relied on correspondents in each community to send in news items. Obviously the person who sent this in did not get the facts. Highland Recorder March 24, 1922 Mattie Virginia Leach, a 14 year old girl who made her home with Mr and Mrs. Gideon Propst, north of McDowell, died on Sunday night, a victim of whooping cough and pneumonia. She was a daughter of Mayberry Leach, her mother being dead and made her home with her aunt, Mrs. Propst. Burial was at Totten Chapel on Tuesday.
