Marthinus (Martin) O Skonnord emigrated to America at the age of 21 from Snertingdal, Oppland County, Norway, and homesteaded land in 1877, twelve miles south of Valley City, North Dakota. He was married on Wednesday, 13 December 1882 in Valley City to Martha Andrea Selbo (1854-1926) of Ekne, Levanger, Nørd-Trøndelag County, Norway, the daughter of Ole Nilsen Sælboe (1820-1881) and Guruanna Larsdatter (Falstad) Sælboe (1819-1865). Martin and Martha had four sons: Olaf Bernt, Obert George, Richard Emil, and Arthur Leonard. Martin and his family later moved in 1903 to Red Deer, Canada, but returned to repurchase their original homestead land in 1907. The Martin Skonnords operated their farm until 1909 when they visited Norway for a year. On their return to the states, they bought a home on Sunnyside Avenue in Valley City. Martha Skonnord died in March 1926 and Martin Skonnord passed away in April 1940. Martin's eldest son, Olaf Bernt Skonnord (1883-1958), was married in 1909 to Bergine Skonnord (1887-1977) of Snertingdal, Norway, the daughter of Ole Petter Olsen Skonnord (1852-1937) and Beathe Andreasdatter (Austdal) Skonnord (1863-1922). Except for brief intervals, the couple continued to operate the Skonnord farm until 1957. Olaf designed and had built the barn and grain elevator on the farm. The grain elevator was unique in its day. He enjoyed inventing and obtained several patents - one of which was a practical tractor hitch. One of his other interests was the breeding and raising of Barola Bronze turkeys for which he received national grand champion and first prize ribbons. In the community, Olaf served for many years on the Skandia Township Board and the School Board. Olaf and Bergine had three children: Mildred Bergjlot (Skonnord) Loftheim Romig (1910-2008) of Manchester, Missouri, later Williamsburg, Virginia; Melville Orval (Orville) Skonnord (1914-1997) of Valley City; and Charlotte Bernice (Skonnord) Thompson (1921-2006) of Baltimore, Maryland, later Columbia, Maryland. Olaf B Skonnord died on 16 April 1958. Bergine Skonnord later lived at the Sheyenne Memorial Hospital, Valley City. She died on 5 December 1977. Olaf's son, Melville Orval Skonnord, was married to Lois Elaine Olson (1925-1983) of Fargo, North Dakota, and they later operated the original Skonnord farm. Mel served as a Township Supervisor and also served on the church council of Our Saviour's Lutheran Church of Valley City. Lois was active in the Women's Circle of that church and was a member of the Skandia Homemakers Club. Lois died in 1983. Mel died on 21 April 1997 in Peoria, Maricopa County, Arizona.
