They were the parents of Leroy, Edgar, Albion, and Audrey Pottorff MARTIN ALMON POTTORFF Martin Almon Pottorff was born near Ringgold City, Iowa Aug. 27th, 1884 and died at the Vail Ranch near Beebe, Montana, Dec. 10th, 1919, the result of being fatally kicked upon the neck and chest by one of the horses he was driving. Mr. Pottorff was freighting by team between Miles City and Olive, his home when the accident occurred and while driving through the bitter cold apparently something broke about the harness and he trying to mend it he recieved a kick from one of the horses he had been worried about. Knowing that he had been fatally injured he left the team standing in the road and staggered down the road to the Vaill Ranch house which was only a short distance away and upon reaching it he was so nearly exhusted that he fell head long through the doorway. Mrs. Vaill rushed to his assistance and seeing he was nearly gone, ask if his team had run away. He replied that they had not but were standing up the road a little way and that one of them had kicked him. One of the Vaill boys started after the team and another after a doctor and Mrs. Pottorff while Mrs. Vaill and her other son succeeded in getting the injured man's wet clothing off and putting him to bed but he died in a few minutes before either the doctor or his wife reached the scene. His last words were "oh how I prayed and prayed to get here and what will become of my wife and little children. Mrs. Vaill assured him that they would be looked after and with a last convulsive struggle he was gone. He was laid to rest Dec. 19, in the Miles City Cemetery and leaves to mourn the loss a wife and four small children, his mother, one brother, his step-father, two half sisters, three half brothers and a host of other relatives and friends by whom he was dearly beloved. Mr. Pottorff lived for a number of years in and around this vicinity and his many friends have extended to the bereaved relatives their heart felt sympathy and to the small children and sorrowing wife.
