Martin Hackett and his first 2 wives are buried in the Waller-Hackett Burying Ground. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Index-Journal (Greenwood, SC) Saturday, 20 Jun 1942 Martin Hackett Jr, son of Martin Hackett and Frances Garrett Hackett,, may have lived in the vicinity of his brother William Hackett's home west of the present Epworth for a time but he made his first home, evidentally, a few miles away near the original settlement of the Rev John Waller near and some distance back of the present home of D B Vines. Martin Hackett's first wife was Matilda Waller, daughter of Benjamin Waller and Joanna Thompson Waller (After the death of Benjamin Waller, she married 2nd Stephen Watson and after Watson's death, she married Charles McGehee) Martin Hackett Jr spent many of the years of his life in Greenwood and located here, so early as 1831, according to the late C M Calhoun. Mr Calhoun and Mr Hackett removed the house which he occupied in Greenwood from Old Cambridge in that year. He cited as his authority, Mrs Stanley Crews who was Amelia Waller (daughter of Thomas Baxter Waller and Sara White Waller) before her marriage and Mrs Crews said she was born in this old house when it stood in or near Cambridge. The house is still standing here and is now owned by Ben M Hollingsworth and it is just off Cambridge Street on Hackett Street and is No. 138 on Hackett Street. It has been restored and improved and seems to be good for another hundred years. This was the house of Martin Hackett and his first wife, Matilda Waller. They had several children, only one of whom lived to reach maturity, Almena Hackett. Two girls, Joanna Waller Hackett and Caroline Matilda Hackett, died young. Other children were: William C Hackett, died Aug 15, 1853, age 23 years Leonard Waller Hackett, died young Martin Hackett married 2nd Adeline W King. His first wife, Matilda Waller was born Nov 26, 1794, married Martin Hackett on Sept 3, 1816 and died Dec 31, 1835. Adeline W King was born Jan 28, 1813, married Martin Hackett Apr 13, 1837 and she died May 30, 1839. Martin Hackett and his first and second wives are all buried in the Waller-Hackett Family Burying Ground on the D B Vines place, one wife on each side. The date of his birth is on his gravestone is May 2, 1787 - while in the family bible the date is May 2, 1785. There were no children of the marriage of Martin Hackett and Adeline W King but there were children of his third marriage to Mrs Reuben F Hutchison of Phoenix. Mrs Hutchison was Mary Lipscomb, daughter of Thomas Lipscomb Sr and Elizabeth Waller Lipscomb. Martin Hackett, after living in Greenwood for many years, returned to his old community where he still owned considerable land and lived on his farm near the present D B Vines place and then later returned to Greenwood after the War Between the States. He died in Greenwood Dec 26, 1869. The Martin Hackett house out in the country burned many years ago. The house site and some of the land are owned by J M Marshall.
