Carleton SMITH, well-known farmer and stockman of Jefferson township, died at his home just east of Enterprise, Tuesday afternoon, Oct. 29th, after several months of illness. Mr. SMITH had not been in good health since he met with an accident some years ago but had continued to care for his farm duties until recent months when illness confined him to his home. Mr. SMITH came of an old southern family and was the son of Thornton and Ann (SIDENER) SMITH, early settlers of Monroe County. He was born in that county June 1st, 1854, hence was 75 years old at the time of his death. He was well educated for those early days, having attended college at Canton. Later he taught school near Hunnewell and Lentner. He was married to Mary Elizabeth TURNER, daughter of the late Dr. Luther TURNER, of Cherry Box, Mrs. SMITH died three years ago. After their marriage, Mr. and Mrs. SMITH made their home in Clark county near Wyanconda. Some thirty-nine years ago, they came to Shelby county and made their home here until their deaths. Mr. SMITH was one of the largest land owners of Jefferson township and the county. Always interested in good stock, he was one of the prominent feeders of the community and for many years he was very successful as a feeder of mules, once the main industry of Jefferson township. He leaves but one sister Mrs. Geeter KEITH, of Paris, the sole survivor of a family of 13 children. Of his ten children, seven survive him. They are Mrs. Gertrude SAYER of Sylvia, Kansas; Mrs. Grace BERGER, of Middletown, Mo.; Mrs. Geo. ESTES, of Westboro, Mo.; Evaline and Lutie at home and two sons Elbert and Notley, both of whom live near the home place. Three daughters are deceased, Mrs. Claudie WOOD, Mrs. Florence WESLEY and Mrs. Bessie HAMPTON. Mr. SMITH was a member of the Christian church at Union and always took a prominent part in the church work there. His funeral services will be conducted by Rev. C.E.
