Description	:	Martin Christian Mangelsen was born November 11, 1889 in Tårs Parish, Børglum, Hjørring, Denmark to Christian Marinus Jensen, a 16 year old servant in the home of Hedevig Margrethe Frederikke Koeck, and Ane Margrethe Marie Mangelsen. His early childhood was spent in the home of his maternal grandparents in Tårs. He took the name of his maternal grandfather "Mangelsen" but later changed the spelling to "Mengelsen."In 1910 at the age of 21, while still single, he left Denmark and sailed on the ship C.F. His early childhood was spent in the home of his maternal grandparents in Tårs. He took the name of his maternal grandfather "Mangelsen" but later changed the spelling to "Mengelsen."In 1910 at the age of 21, while still single, he left Denmark and sailed on the ship C.F. Tietgen for America. His occupation was listed as "laborer." He was accompanied on his journey by his future wife, Petra Andersen. Although the ship manifest lists them both as "single," it is evident that they intended to marry, especially considering the ship manifest specifies that passage for both of them was paid by his "brother in law, Ta's? Wilson Spencer, Iowa." Martin was described as 5 feet 9 inches tall with dark hair and brown eyes. Martin and Petra were married on January 21, 1911 in Spencer, Iowa, and this community is where they lived their lives and reared a family. Martin's 1917 WWI draft registration card lists his occupation as "Teamster 30," while the 1930 and 1940 census reports list his occupation as "laborer odd jobs" and "mason," respectively. His obituary indicates that his masonry work was with the firms K.R. Camp and John Vestergaard. He retired at the age of 72. Martin and Petra had three sons, Oscar Henry, Clarence Raymond, and Ernest Harlan; and one daughter, Margaret Dagmar. Martin lived to age 99, outliving all three of his sons. His funeral was held in the Warner Chapel in Spencer, and he and Petra are buried in the the Riverside Cemetery in Spencer.
