This venerable citizen is one of the most highly honored in the northern part of Marshall county, where, for many decades, he has been a resident and where he has labored to goodly ends, acquiring, by his indomitable energy and honest dealings, a competency which has enabled him to spend his declining years in respite and comfort. He has also done much to advance the interests of his neighbors and the community in general, and, having lived here from the early pioneer days, it is indeed interesting to hear him recall reminiscences of that far-away period when the country was wild and sparsely settled, when there was plenty of wild game and when the whoop of the red man had not yet died away entirely. He has been an interested spectator of this wonderful transformation and has done his full share in the same. Martin Gridley Updike, now in his ninety-third year. heaven having bounteously lengthened out his days, is a native of the old Empire state, having been born in Seneca county, New York, December 14, 1818. He is the son of William and Charity (White) Updike, both natives of the state of New Jersey, where they grew up and were married, settling in Seneca county, New York, in an early day, and there the death of the mother occurred in January, 1819, leaving Martin Gridley an only child. Later the father married Nellie Williamson, by which union four children were born. The death of the father occurred in New York at the age of fifty-six years. He was a farmer, and a Whig in politics. The subject was reared on a farm and educated in the public schools of his native county. He was a Whig in early life, and he voted for William Henry Harrison, and after the Republican party was organized he was loyal in his support to the same and he also voted for Benjamin Harrison. Mr. Updike came to Marshall County, Iowa, in 1853 and entered one hundred and sixty-five acres of land, beginning life in typical pioneer fashion, and in due course of time he had a good farm and a comfortable home. He still owns eighty acres of the homestead, which he took up under President Franklin Pierce. He is now living retired in his cozy home in Liscomb. Mr. Updike was married in 1844 to Elizabeth McKnight, a native of New York, and two children were born to this union, Augusta Jane and William U., both deceased. The first wife dying, Mr. Updike later married Louisa Ingledeu, a native of Ohio, and this union resulted in the birth of two children, Sarah, wife of Cal Steelsmith, of Bethany, Missouri, and Wilbur, who died when fourteen months old, he having been the first born. Augusta Jane Updike mentioned above, married G. R. Haas, of Marshall county, and they have two children, Charles and Frank. William U. Updike, mentioned above, married Sarah Sweet, a native of New York, born there on April 1, 1849, the daughter of Jerome B. Sweet, Sr., and Ann Sheffel, both natives of New York, from which state they came to Hardin county, Iowa, in 1854, later entering one hundred and sixty acres in Grundy county; for fifteen years they lived in Liscomb where the father died on June 25, 1898, the wife dying on September 19, 1893. To William U. Updike and wife eight children were born, namely: Nettie Ann, who was the wife of Frank O'Brien, died in March, 1908, after becoming the mother of four children, Vurl, Ronald, Ardis and Von. Nellie Updike died January 30, 1886. Martin Jerome is farming the place owned by his grandfather, the subject. Nora Edna is the wife of Frank Groesbeck and they have three children, Basil, Wanda and Claud. Claud Updike is living in Canada, where he owns four hundred acres of land. Lyle Glenn lives in Liscomb. Rhoda is the wife of Leonard Beatty, and they have two children, Cleo Martin and Velda. The youngest child of William U. Updike, a son, died in infancy. The father of these children, who was a well known and successful farmer, died on April 14, 1906.
