Description	:	Martin Poling Sr. is the son of Samuel Jr. and Elizabeth (Porks) Poling and was born in Barbour County, West Virginia, on January 29, 1819. He received his education there and was trained to be a farmer. In 1836 the family came to Oho and settled in Union County, where he married Peree Carpenter on August 4, 1839. She was the daughter of Solomon and Catharine (Hill) Carpenter. He received his education there and was trained to be a farmer. In 1836 the family came to Oho and settled in Union County, where he married Peree Carpenter on August 4, 1839. Martin and Peree Poling were the parents of ten Children, Silvas, Cyrena, Totten, Jane, Mary Ett, Peree , Josephine, George, Arthur, and Marin H. In 1865, the family moved to Shelby County. Iowa, previously living in Union County for three years, Van Buren County, Iowa for eight years. Mahaska County, Iowa for seven years. then Jasper County for eight years. After coming to Shelby County , in 1867 he took up a claim of forty acres all of which was wild land and purchased an additional 40 acres. When the Civil War broke out Martin Poling responded to the call to defend the flag and enlisted in Company B, 13th Iowa Volunteer Infantry; he served for eleven months and later was discharged account of failing health. When Peree died, Martin made his home amongst his children; he has thirty grandchildren and one great grandchild.
