Description	:	Funeral services for Martin J Finestead, 96, of Granger, were held October 13, 1992 at the First Christian Church in Granger. Mr Finestead died of a heart ailment at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Martin was born in Boone County, Iowa on August 27, 1896. He resided on a farm in that area, married Hazel Hurst in 1915, and in 1920 moved to Granger to continue farming until his retirement. In 1971 Martin was married to Bessie Battles of Runnells and they made their home in Granger until his death. He is survived by his wife, Bessie; three daughters, Gladys (Fred)... Mr Finestead died of a heart ailment at Iowa Lutheran Hospital in Des Moines. Martin was born in Boone County, Iowa on August 27, 1896. He resided on a farm in that area, married Hazel Hurst in 1915, and in 1920 moved to Granger to continue farming until his retirement. In 1971 Martin was married to Bessie Battles of Runnells and they made their home in Granger until his death. He is survived by his wife, Bessie; three daughters, Gladys (Fred) Roth of Granger, Georgia Wilson of Grimes, and Bette (Rolland) Strutz of Bismark, ND; Three step-daughters Annabelle DeGraff and Pataricia Neal, both of Runnells, and Carmen Ingle of Sellersville, PA; two sons, Lowell (Lenora) Finestead of Granger, Martin Jr. (Virgina) Finestead of Granger; two stepsons, Robert Battles and Raymond Battles, both of Runnells; a sister, Jesi Marie (James) Mathers of Prescott, AZ; !3 grandchildren; 18 step grandchildren; 23 great grandchildren; 20 step great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. Martin was preceded in death by his father and mother, Mr and Mrs Herman Finestead of rural Ogden; two brothers, Phillip of Granger, and Norman of Ogden, a sister, Mrs Walter Jipp of Boone. Hazel passed away in 1969. Martin will long be remembered by his family and friends as an honest, hardworking family man possessed with many great qualities. There was always a welcome mat at the door for all his children, grand children and many, many friends. To his family, most will remember him as "Granpie", and their memories of him will go on in their hearts.
