Mr. Kane was born in Scranton, Pa., and came westward at an early age. He had been a well known figure in Norfolk since his years of active service on the police force, from which he resigned many years ago. Mr. Kane served through the early days in Norfolk, when this city was the center of one of the boldest gangs of robbers and thugs who have ever been hunted down by law. He was through many a fierce gun battle and was the direct cause of putting at least a hundred convicts into striped clothing. It was Officer Martin Kane who hunted down the Carson outfit, a band of robbers who operated throughout Stanton county, and sent them all to the Lincoln penitentiary. It was he who got the Eddles, another band with headquarters here, and secured prison sentences for them. He is also credited with the capture of the Clark outfit, another burglar gang. During his entire service, Officer Kane was never hurt in the slightest particular. He never killed a man, although he shot at dozens. During three years of constant night service he never missed a single night's watching and during his whole career no prisoner ever escaped from him when once caught. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Nellie Welsh of Sioux City, Ia., Mrs. Mary Scully of Chicago, Mrs Margaret Whisman of Sioux City, Ia., and three sons, William and Martin, Jr., both of Norfolk and James Kane.
