He had been in a serious condition for some time and he was taken to Hutchinson to undergo an operation as a last hope of benefiting him, but he did not rally from the operation. The funeral services were held from the Larned Methodist church Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and were conducted by Rev. Pierce of Pierceville, an old friend of the family and a former pastor. Interment was in Larned Cemetery. Martin Long was born in Ross County, Ohio, August 26, 1845, and was aged 72 years, 10 months and 16 days at the time of his death. [His parents were George Long, and Rosanna Bridwell Long of Ross County, Ohio.] He was united in marriage to Maria Elizabeth Free, January 1, 1868. To this union were born six children, one daughter, Minnie, having preceded him to the better world. He is survived by his wife and five children: William A. Long of Oregon City, Ore., Orval O. Long of Lewis, Kan., Allison M. Long of Belpre, Kan., Mrs. A. E. Kinnamon of Cimarron, Kan., and Mrs. M. H. Webber of Haggard, Kan., and also leaves fourteen grandchildren. All of the children were at his bedside during his last illness except Orval, who is now serving his country across the sea. Mr. Long was a veteran of the Civil War. He enlisted July 17, 1863, in Battery A, 1st Ohio Heavy Artillery, and served until the close of the war, being mustered out July 23d, 1865. He was an active member of B. F. Larned Post, G. A. R., and also of the I. O. O. F., both of which orders attended the funeral in a body. Mr. Long came to Kansas in 1880,[from Boone County Indiana] settling on a farm fourteen miles southeast of Larned, where with his family he experienced the difficulties of the pioneer days. In 1900 he moved to Larned, and this has been his home since. He was converted when a young man and lived a consistent Christian life since. He was an active member of the Larned Methodist church. He was a great lover of his home and family, and was held in the highest esteem by all who knew him. His last days were days of suffering, but he bore it all with patience, and as the end drew near he called his loved ones about him and bade each one goodbye. The following lines were written by Mrs. M. H. Webber in memory of her father, and were read at the funeral service: Darling father, thou hast left us, Thou has left a vacant chair. Each day brings us nearer, father, When we'll meet each other there. How we've heard your dear lips utter As we knelt in family prayer, "May we each one meet in heaven. May there be no vacant chair."
