Martin Luther Canup was married to Inez Bollinger on June 19, 1918 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They are known to have had one son; 1. Read More	MARTIN LUTHER CANUP Martin Luther Canup was born on March 10, 1879 in Rowan County, North Carolina, the son of Caleb Canup and Julia Ann (Brown) Canup. Martin Luther Canup was married to Inez Bollinger on June 19, 1918 in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. They are known to have had one son; 1. William Caleb Canup, born October 19, 1921 in New York City and died November 5, 2009. William was a member of the 446th Bomb Group, not the 446th Bomb Squadron as his obituary states. "William (Bill) was raised in Detroit where his father was pastor of the largest Lutheran Church in the city. Bill attended Wayne University and on enlistment in the Army, was granted an early graduation, was trained by the Army Air Corps in Colorado and commissioned a Lieutenant. He served as Navigator on bombing missions with the 446th Bomber Squadron in WWII, participating in the D Day invasion. On his last mission, his plane was disabled forcing him to parachute out. He was captured and held as a prisoner in a POW camp in Germany. After a forced march to Bavaria, the US Army liberated the prisoners and Bill was put in charge of a large group of POWs until they could ship home. Following the war, Bill studied anthropology at Harvard University, receiving his MA and was working on his PhD when he was offered a position in the newly enhanced diplomatic corps at the U.S. State Department. This earned him an assignment in Germany to work with displaced persons utilizing his considerable language skills. He served in Marseilles and Paris, France as a vice counsel and played a significant role in the crackdown of the narcotics trade known as the French Connection. Other assignments included Consul to Elisabethville in the Belgian Congo as Chief Diplomat, representing the U.S. during the Congo crisis. Bill also was posted to Paris in various embassy positions, including the U.S. representative to NATO when France pulled out of the military wing of NATO. Bill returned to Washington, DC and the State Department where he served as Assistant Under Secretary for African Affairs. After retiring from the State Department, he worked with the DC Council of Governments, Georgetown University and AARP's Program Division. He moved to Santa Fe, NM in 1998 and was appointed to the New Mexico Governor's Council on Indian Affairs where he served for three years. Bill was an active member of the Santa Fe chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution. Bill is survived by his wife, Adele Milone Canup; and two sons: James William Canup of Richmond, VA, and Eric Anthony Canup of San Francisco, CA; grandchildren: Elise, William, and Ann Charlotte. A Eucharistic Service honoring Bill will be held on Sunday, November 22, 2009, at Christ Lutheran Church, 1701 Arroyo Chamiso, Santa Fe, NM at 3 p.m. A Reception will follow. Interment will take place on April 30, 2010 at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Bill's honor to Christ Lutheran Church. Martin's ordination: 1907 by Virginia Synod. Martin served at Woman's Memorial (now Emmanuel), High Point, 1909 to 1912 First, Greensboro, 1909-10 New York City, 1912 to 1940; St. Louis, Mo. Pastor to Lutheran students at Wayne University, Detroit, and soldiers and sailors in training there during World War II. Martin retired 1940 at Detroit. Engaged in personnel work for Chrysler Corporation from 1940 to 1953. Martin died on January 22, 1956 and his mortal remains were laid in the St. Paul Cemetery, Rowan County, N.C.
