The announcement of Mr. Sullivan's death was a shock to many of our citizens. Read More	Martin Sullivan Passes Away Martin Sullivan died at his home just South of Alvord Saturday morning at 2:30 o'clock. The announcement of Mr. Sullivan's death was a shock to many of our citizens. He had been ailing for about six weeks, but out of that time he had been confined to his home, and part of the time to his bed, only about ten days, and few knew that his life was in danger. Leakage of the heart was the cause of his death. Mr. Sullivan was a pioneer of Northwest Iowa,having lived in Lyon and Sioux County for more than 40 years. He was a man highly respected for his integrity and industry; he was generous, always ready to help those deserving help, and in earlier days helped many a neighbor who was in need of assistance. His frugality was rewarded in this world's possessions. Martin Sullivan was respected by his fellowmen. He was honest and upright and passed on leaving no enemies. Martin Sullivan was born at Highland, Wis., on December 15th, 1858, where he lived until 1881, when he came West, settling at Hull, Iowa. Some two or three years later he bought a farm southeast of Rock Valley, near the present site of Carmel. On January 17, 1886, he was married to Ellen Barth. To this union six children were born -- three sons and three daughters, all of whom survive, and are John and Frank of Alvord and Robert of Canton, SD; the daughters are Clara of Aberdeen, SD, Anna of Sioux City, IA, and Stella (Sister Mary Celestine) of Lincoln, Ill. There are two grandchildren, Reta and Joseph, Robert's children. Also the following brothers and sisters survive him - Michael of Platteville, Wis., Lawrence and Thomas of Highland, Wis., and James of Muscoda, Wis., and Anna, Alice and Mrs. Wm. Lampe - all of Highland, Wis. In 1900 the family moved to the present farm where they have since resided. The funeral was held from Sacred Heart church, Monday morning, October 23rd at 9:00 o'clock, Father Roder officating. Father Cooper of Leeds was present and spoke a few words of consolation to the bereaved wife and children. The remains were laid to final rest in St. Mary's Cemetery. Those attending the funeral from abroad were, Mr. and Mrs. Thos. Quinnlan and Clara and Julia Barth of Worthing, SD., Mrs. AJ Quinnlan and son of Elkton, SD., JE Barth of Groton, SD., Mrs. John Huseman, of Kimball, SD., and Lawrence and Thos.
