Read More	Martin Ulch Elberon Pioneer Died Saturday Was Born At Sea In 1858 Before Reaching America Martin Ulch, who with his twin brother Albert, was born November 12, 1858. passed away at his home In Elberon on May 2nd, having readied the age of 83 years, 5 months and 20 days. He was born on a boat at sea about two days before arriving in the United States from the village of Nebelov, Bohemia, and then came directly to Iowa City, Iowa, where the family resided about two weeks, and then moved to a farm In York township. Tama county where he lived with his parents until April 29. 1879, on which date he was united in marriage to Katie Buresh, who was also a resident of York township. They started farming on the Ulch homestead southwest of Elberon, where they lived for four years in a log cabin. In 1883 they moved to Elberon where they have since resided. To this union were born seven children. In 1884. Mr. Ulch started a Dry Goods and General Store in Elberon which he operated until 1913, when he retired. He took an active part in civic affairs, having served as mayor and councilman for several years. He also served as a member of the Elberon public school board for several years. He was one of the oldest members of the West Irving Odd Fellow lodge, having Joined the order in 1889, and served as secretary of the lodge for a number of years. Mr. and Mrs. Ulch lived happily together for 63 years, having observed their 63rd wedding anniversary on April 29th. He leaves to mourn his loss his wife and the following children. Albert of Clutier, Mrs. Agnes Wieben of Keystone; Fred, Otto and Leonard of Elberon, Iowa and a grandson, Glenn Kaloupek, who was brought up by his grandparents since the death of his mother, Mrs. Emma Kaloupek when he was 14 months old. This was his home continuously until called to the army at Sheppard Field, Texas, on February 12 of this year. Due to army regulations, he was unable to attend the funeral. Two daughters, Mrs. Emma Kaloupek, wife of Joseph Kaloupek and an infant daughter, preceded their father in death. He leaves also his twin brother. Albert, who lives at Chelsea, also fourteen grandchildren, three great grandchildren and a host of friends. Services were held at the Methodist church in Elberon Tuesday at 2 p. m. with the Rev. Ruth Husband of Elberon and Rev. F. J. Zavodsky of Berwyn, Illinois, officiating. Casket bearers were Orris Pryne, E. P. Skrable, John Silhanek, Joe Sikir, Joe Novak and Fred Bockholt. The singers were Mrs. P. R. Overturf, Mrs. S. H. Postolka, E. J. Kucera and J. M. Skrable, with Mrs. Milton Beck, accompanying. Interment was in the National cemetery near vining.
