Vernon Township passed away at 10 o'clock Saturday night from the effects of injuries he sustained on Friday morning previous by falling from the hay loft in the barn on the home place 8½ miles northeast of this city and from which he did not gain consciousness until death claimed him. The deceased was in his seventieth year and came directly to that part of the country at the close of the civil war in which he served his country for nearly three years during which he saw much hardship, having served a term of months in the Andersonville prison. When released from that hole he was badly broken in health and while recovering somewhat from the awful experiences that he endured, yet up to his last days he suffered from the effects of his imprisonment. While at Andersonville prison his name was called in the exchange of prisoners. Mr. Sunderlin, then a young man without family became acquainted with a fellow who had a family and going to him told him to fall in line when the name of Sunderlin was called and by doing so secure his liberty and return to his family which he did and Mr. Sunderlin remained a prisoner for many months after, suffering all the horrors of which history gives but a faint conception. This act alone shows the self sacrificing spirit of the man who has now answered the final summons. As a resident of this county he was honored with many positions of public trust and ever held the confidence and respect of his friends and neighbors. His devoted wife and helpmate preceded him to the grave about a year ago and since that time up until his death he has been making his home with his daughter, Madge. The funeral services will-take place Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the late home where a short prayer service will he held after which the reaming will he taken to the M. E. church at Janesville where the last sad rites will take place conducted by Rev. Smith, after which all that is mortal of the honored soldier citizen will be laid to their eternal rest beside those of the departed wife in the village churchyard. The surviving members of the family are: George, residing at Mt.
