Description	:	Martin Van Buren Roberts and his family were early pioneers of the Fortuna (formerly known as Springville) area. He was born in Logan County, Ohio. He married Emily Layport or La Porte. Martin and his family moved to Iowa, then in 1884 they left for Vacaville, Solano, California. Around 1888, he and his family made a permanent home in the Fortuna, Humboldt, California area. Martin Van Buren Roberts was a Christian minister and also farmed the land in Fortuna. The Christian Evangelist September 22, 1892 "Brother Martin Vanburen Roberts passed from this life to his reward in heaven, at his home in Fortuna, Cal., on the 17th day of August at 1:00 A.M. , after a brief illness. Bro. Roberts was born in Logan county, O., July 10, 1834; was married February 17th, 1856 at Plum Creek, Fremont county, Iowa to Miss Emily M. Laport of Logan county, Ohio. He united with the Christian church at the age of 17 years under the preaching of Bro. W. W. Dowling by whom he was baptized. He leaves a wife, three sons and four daughters, together with a host of friends to mourn their loss. The writer has known Bro. Roberts for several years, was his pastor for two or three years, during which time my relations with him were very intimate, and it affords me great pleasure to say that he was a zealous, pure, consecrated Christian, a devoted husband, an affectionate father and kind neighbor and a faithful friends. He was an earnest, devout student of the Bible and held family worship daily. His walk was a daily benediction to those who knew him best and understood him aright. He died as he had lived, fully trusting in the promises of the Savior. 'Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord.' Blessed memory. Kind friend, farewell. O.O. Fulker"
