Davis was born September 2, 1927 in Northfield, Iowa, the 7th son of Lewis and Inez Charbonneau Davis and lived his entire life in the Des Moines County area. He was proud to be a direct descendent of Sacagawea. He married his soul mate, Sandra Samuelson on April 20, 1948 in Burlington. Marvel enlisted in the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 during World War II along with his six brothers. Marvel was a skilled heavy equipment operator and was proud of his work building highways in Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri as well as the lock and dam system at Keokuk. While he loved his work, it was his family he loved more, so he began his own business, M.A. Davis Excavating in 1963 to be with them more. His goal was never to be the biggest, but to always work with pride and integrity. In that endeavor, he succeeded. Marvel had the ability to master any job easily, and worked with a perfectionist's zeal. He had a strong sense of what was fair, and always strove to make sure his workmen performed at a level above expectations. He was a long-standing member of the Brotherhood of Operating Engineers, the Masons and the Moose. Marvel was an excellent husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. His family was his pride and joy. Each generation will miss him for what he brought to their lives. Marvel had a wonderful sense of humor and a quick wit. He was fond of puzzles, and mastered the most difficult with ease. He was a friend to many, always there when someone needed a helping hand. He lived simply, but honestly. He led his family by example and his word was his bond. Marvel A. Davis, 79, of Burlington, passed away at 12:38 p.m. Thursday, November 9th, 2006 in University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa surrounded by his loving wife, children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Sandra, sons, Brian (Deborah) Davis of Madison, WI, Randall Davis of Marietta, GA, and Mark (Janet) Davis, M.D.of Punta Gorda, FL, daughter, Kathy (Rick) Little of Burlington, sisters, Lily Mae Hillson of San Antonio, TX, Lee Meacham of Lady of the Lakes, FL, and Clarissa Hester of Chagrin Falls, OH, brothers, Melvin of Columbia, MO and Marshall of Littleton, CO, seven grandchildren, Amy Blythe, Chali Masotta, Travis Little, Brian Davis, Jr, Teresa Good, Joey Davis, Joel Davis, two step-grandchildren, Keanu and Matias Robles, 11 great grandchildren, Heather, Taylor, Kayla, Jodie, Baley, Jessie, Jarret, Alyssa, Tyler, Maxwell, and Vincent, and numerous nieces and nephews, cousins, and one aunt, Alsace Heinold of Danville. Marvel was preceded in death by his father, Lewis, mother, Inez, brothers, Oscar, Ivan, Sheldon, George, and sister, Phila Dochterman. Marvel passed away peacefully. We will miss him and so will many others to whom he was a friend. Visitation will begin at 9:00 a.m. Sunday; November 12, 2006 at the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home where the family will receive friends from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. The Funeral Service for Mr. Davis will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday, November 13, 2006 in the Chapel of the Hass-Thielen Funeral Home with Pastor Dan Buck officiating. Full military honors will be rendered by the Burlington Area Veterans Honor Guard. Interment will be in Edwards Cemetery in Oakville. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established.
