He attended District 3 and Zion Lutheran Parochial schools, graduating from Pierce High in 1949. He was confirmed by M.F. Sheips on March 15, 1945, at Zion Lutheran Church in Pierce, where he became a lifelong member. He served as elder and held other church offices. Marvin married Joan Higert on Aug. 10, 1952, at Zion Lutheran Church. To this union, they had four boys. Joan died April 15, 1994. On Sept. 21, 1996, Marvin married Lois Koehler at Zion Lutheran Church. He served in the U.S. Army from March 25, 1953, to Feb. 3, 1955, during this time he served at an air base in England. After serving his country, Marvin farmed for 28 years. In 1983, he began working at Dale Electronics until retiring in 1997. He also did part-time work at Kolterman Equipment and was a long time Archer Petroleum dealer. Marvin was preceded in death by his first spouse, Joan; his parents, Edwin and Clarice; a brother, Leonard; and a brother-in-law, Carol Silhacek.
