Saunders, 75, of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, March 13, 2002, at his home in Oskaloosa. He was born on August 14, 1926, near Montezuma in Poweshiek County, Iowa, the son of Marsh and Vera Cox Saunders. Following high school graduation, he served in the United States Army during World War II. Following his discharge from the Army, he was an engineer for the M. & St. L. Railroad and Chicago & Northwestern Railroad for over 24 years. On January 20, 1952, he was united in marriage to Virginia Richmond at Princeton, Missouri, and she died January 5, 2000. After retiring from the railroad, he operated a gas tank wagon in Oskaloosa, and later worked for the Mahaska County Landfill for 14 years, before retiring in 1988. He was a member of the V.F.W., the American Legion, the Elks, Tri Luminar Lodge # 18, A.F. & A.M., and Scottish Rite of Free Masonry in Davenport. Marvin enjoyed camping and fishing on the Des Moines River, and the companionship of his cats. He is survived by a brother: Melvin (& Lenetta) Saunders of DeWitt, Iowa; many nieces and nephews; 3 sisters in law: Maxine Hightower, Madge Whalen, and Betty Rhoades, all of Oskaloosa; and 2 brothers in law: Eugene (Smoke) Burnham of Oskaloosa, and Dick (& Alice) Richmond of Wilton, California. Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by his parents, and a son in infancy. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 16, 2002, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel, Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Jonathan Meyer officiating. Burial will be in the Jackson Township Cemetery at Montezuma, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa V.F.W. and American Legion. There will be a Masonic Memorial Service Friday at 6:30 p.m. at the funeral chapel, and visitation with the family will follow that service until 8 p.m. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
