Marvin died Saturday, November 21, 2015, at Alpine Village in Verdigre. Marvin Dale Tonner was born to Edward and Neta Madge Barnes Tonner on December 11, 1933, at Verdel, Nebraska. He attended public school in Verdel, where he graduated in 1951. Marvin then entered the military. He took his basic training at Fort Riley, Kansas, and then was shipped overseas to Enewetak of the Marshall Islands to serve in the Korean War from 1953 to 1955. There Marvin experienced what life was like to live on an island that was an atomic bomb proving ground. He witnessed the testing of one hydrogen bomb and six atomic bombs, the hydrogen being the worst. During his time in the military, Marvin cultivated a lifelong friendship with William “Bill” Haupt and his brother Jack and their families. This friendship would prove to be a source of fun family camping trips and lots of fishing throughout the years. In January of 1955, Marvin received his honorable discharge. On March 14, 1956, Marvin married Velma Ann Schlote at Niobrara Lutheran Church. To this union two children were born: Dale Allen and Deborah Ann. The first family home was in Pierre, South Dakota where he helped build the dam. From there he worked on a dairy farm in Madison, Nebraska. The next move was to the family farm near Niobrara, owned by Velma’s parents, Alfred and Amy Schlote. During this time, Marvin and Velma acquired a dairy herd of their own and did some farming. In 1980, Marvin retired from farming and moved to town, where he and Velma had jobs in Yankton, South Dakota. He retired completely in 2000. Marvin was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 4834, American Legion Post 223, marking his 60th year of membership. He also served on the Knox County Veterans Affairs Board for fifteen years. Marvin always had a heart for children. He loved taking his grandchildren on trips when they were small and enjoyed watching them grow up. So it was no surprise to the family when the greatgrandchildren came along that he was extremely passionate about each one of them. Marvin loved it when they came to visit, especially when they came to the nursing home to see him. Marvin loved to watch them play as he passed out nickels that he won playing three card bingo or the horse race game. They would lie on the floor in his room and have a contest on who would get their nickels to spin the longest. Marvin watched them push each other around in his wheelchair and fight over who got to use his walker. He loved the excitement they generated. Marvin passed away Saturday morning, November 21, 2015, at Alpine Village in Verdigre, Nebraska at the age of 81. Marvin is survived by his daughter, Deborah Nielsen and husband, Larry; two grandchildren, Kirklyn Nielsen and Kristin Nielsen Talsma and their spouses, Julia Talsma Nielsen and Ty Talsma; six great-grandchildren, Kalyn, Karli, and Kash Nielsen and Terran, Treyvan, and Gianna Talsma, all of Verdigre, Nebraska; two sisters, Lena Vesely of Verdigre and Lila Pritchett of Lynch, Nebraska; and a host of other family and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Edward and Madge Tonner; two brothers, Don and Allen “Doc” Henderson; one sister, June Swanson; his wife, Velma; and son, Dale.
