Description	:	Richmond Times Dispatch: "M.J. "Peachy" Menefee, Harry F. Byrd Sr.'s right-hand man for 30 years in the U.S. Senate. died yesterday in Luray. He was 89. Mr. Menefee, a World War I hero, went to Washington in 1932 as secretary to A. Willis Robertson, when Robertson was a member of the House of Representatives. He joined Byrd's staff as administrative assistant in 1936 and served for the next three decades. When Byrd's son, Harry F. Mr. Menefee was born in Covington but his family moved to Luray when he was 10. His father was a foreman in a Luray tannery. After being graduated as valedictorian of his high school class, Mr. Menefee attended Washington and Lee University. He joined the Army as a private when the United States entered World War I, rising to the rank of first lieutenant. He received numerous awards for bravery and the French government honored him with its highest decoration for his action in holding up German advance that would have left a flank unprotected. Mr. Menefee received a serious head wound in the Meuse-Argonne and had to spend two years in military hospitals before he was well enough to return to civilian life. After the was, Mr. Menefee was elected commissioner of revenue for Page County three times. In 1967, Mr. Menefee was cited as the Unsung Virginian of the Year by the Virginia Association of Electric Cooperatives. He was a Mason for 60 years and was a longtime member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. His wife, Anne Hudson Menefee, died in April of last year." Above information courtesy of contributor Susan Menefee # 50633444 *************************************** Information below courtesy of contributor BarryC # 47806468 The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to First Lieutenant (Infantry) Marvin James Menefee, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism in action while serving with 116th Infantry Regiment, 29th Division, A.E.F., at Molleville Farm, France, 12 October 1918, while in charge of a 37-mm. gun section in advance of the assaulting troops, Lieutenant Menefee displayed unusual courage by operating the gun himself after his gunners had been killed, thereby reducing a machine-gun nest which had been holding up the line.
