Roy, Marvin's father, is a brother of Paul Crull, formerly employed by the Traveler, and the brothers are sons of the late George Crull, who was a former popular trustee of Washington township. The Richmond Municipal airport, near Boston, dedicated last July 4, had its first fatal crash last Sunday afternoon, when a New Paris, Ohio man was killed and a Richmond man critically injured. Marvin Leroy Crull, 36 years old, New Paris Gauge and Tool company employee, was killed. Sheridan Slick, 34 years old, 705 South Fifth street, was critically injured. He is in Reid Hospital with a fractured skull, fractured jaw and one leg is fractured in two places. He still was unconscious Tuesday. The plane, a two place Fairchild (PT-19) belonging to Robert Winters, manager of the East Richmond airport, was demolished. Witnesses told investigators that the small plane's motor quit when it was 300 feet in the air after taking off from the east-west runway. Crull, in the front seat of the plane, apparently was at the controls. He has a pilot's license. The two men took off from the East Richmond airport Sunday afternoon at 4:30 o'clock, about and hour before the crash occurred. Slick is a flying instructor at that field. John Redinbaugh, manager of the municipal port, said the plane landed there and took off several times. Crull was reported to have been receiving instructions in landings and take-offs. The airport manager, who was inspecting the runway lighting controls at the time, said the plane took off from west to east and climbed to an altitude of about 300 feer. As it started to circle to the north the motor cut out. After the motor quit the plane made a tight left turn to the west and was gliding toward the southwest when it made a sudden dive toward the ground. Farmers living nearby said it seemed apparent the pilot was attempting to reach a runway for an emergency landing when the crash occurred. The plane, a type used by the army for primary training, was brought to Richmond some time ago from Texas by Ernest Bode. Bode sold the plane to Winters who rented it to Crull and Slick Sunday afternoon. Walter Davis said that the investigation probably would disclose the real reason for the crash. He reported that the gas tank in the right wing was intact and full of gasoline. The left wing, which also contained a gas tank, was smashed. Preliminary investigation, it was reported, showed the right wing tank was turned off. Officials told that the usual practice is to have both tanks turned on in flight. It was possible that the pilot had neglected to turn the second tank on and then the tank in the left wing emptied the motor died for lack of fuel. Redinbaugh said he was the first to reach the scene of the crash. He said that Crull was dead when he reached the plane. He added that Slick was unconscious and that his safety belt was unfastened. This was the second blow for the Crull family within a few months. Just before Christmas the Crull home in New Paris was badly damaged by fire. It since has been rebuilt.
