He died December 22, 1999 at the Lamoni Nursing & Rehabilitation Center in Lamoni. Marvin helped his parents on the farm. On Jan 24, 1938 he married Caramel Leta Perkins in Maryville, Missouri. They made their home in Omaha, Douglas, NE; Afton and Diagonal, Iowa; and Decatur Co., Iowa. To this union four children were born; Verlin LeRoy, Verla Louise, Vicki Lea, and Vaughn Loral. Marvin served in the US Army during US WW II. He was in the European Theater and participated in the Battle of the Bulge. In 1951 Marvin and Caramel bought a farm east of Davis City, Iowa, where they milked cows. Marvin's main occupation was as a self-employed carpenter. He built many area homes and also Sullivan Pharmacy in Leon. Marvin later worked for Stewart's Furniture in Leon until his retirement. Marvin made and gave away many wooden toys, doll house and train for his children and rocking horses for his grandchildren. He also made walking sticks and bird houses. Besides his woodworking, Marvin's other favorite hobby was breaking horses. He took his team of horses and wagon to parades. Marvin was a faithful member of the Baptist church and his church was very important to him. He was also a member of the Diagonal VFW. Marvin provided for his family. He never gave his children advice, but if they asked for help he gave it. Marvin was a kind and loving husband and father and he enjoyed his grandchildren and great-grandchildren very much. Preceding him in death were his parents; son Gerald Akers; and brother Harold Akers. Survivors include his wife Caramel Akers of Lamoni; 4 children; Verlin Akers and wife Mary of Corydon, Iowa; Verla Mitchell and husband Bill of Sevierville, Tennessee; Vicki Sherrell and husband Larry of Plano, Illinois; and Vaughn Akers and wife Anne of Leon, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; Michele Klee and husband Kirt of Maumelle, Arkansas; Will Mitchell and wife Gina of Surgar Grove, Illinois; Craig Mitchell and wife Kris of Sandwich, Illinois; Kevin Sherrell of Elgin, Illinois; Hayley Burns and husband Chuck of Plano, Illinois; and Shane, Andy and Mary Akers of Leon; 6 great-grandchildren; Jennifer Klee of Maumelle, Calen, Ryan and Chad Mitchell of Sugar Grove, Abigail Mitchell of Sandwich, Krystal Burns of Plano, daughters, Lillian Dwinger of Big Bear City, California and Velma Stroup of Lamar, Colorado and their families; brother Melvin Akers of Pueblo, Colorado; two sisters, Mildred Hummel and husband Al of Sun City, Arizona and Arlene Lewis of Clarinda, Page, Iowa; and other relatives and friends. Funeral services were held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday December 26, 1999 at Slade-O'Donnnell Funeral Leon, Iowa with Elders Verlin Akers and Kirt Klee officiating. Burial was in Leon Cem. Military honors were given by Russell E. Marshall American Legion Post #68 of Corydon, Iowa.
