Mrs. Mary Hawkins, aged 32 years, wife of Prof. J. S. Hawkins, 1210 Pennsylvania avenue, East End, answered the summons of death at the City hospital, where she has been confined for over two weeks, at 4:30 o'clock yesterday afternoon. Deceased took sick the first of April, last, and her condition seemed gradually to weaken until it was found necessary to remove her to the City hospital where she underwent an operation. Her condition seemed considerably improved on Monday evening and the death yesterday afternoon was a sad surprise to the loving father and children. Mrs. Hawkins was born near Alliance, O., an only daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. William Gwynn, and spent her girlhood days in that vicinity. In 1897 she was united in marriage with J. S. Hawkins, then principal of the public schools of Beloit, O., where the ceremony took place. Some time later the couple moved to Jefferson county, and then to this city, where they have resided for almost seven years. Prof. Hawkins being principal of the Sixth street school. Deceased has been practically a lifelong member of the Presbyterian church and since residing here has been a member and faithful worker of the Second Presbyterian church. She was also affiliated with the East End W. C. T. U. Society, the Women's Home Missionary society and a member of Crystal chapter No. 18, Order of Eastern Star, of downtown. Her death takes from this city one of its most highly esteemed ladies. Besides her husband, deceased is survived by two children, Russell, aged 13 years and Dorothy, aged 1 year.
