Zmolek, died following a brief illness (natural causes) Tuesday, Dec. 23, 2003, at Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center in Marshalltown. Born Aug. 12, 1912, in Howard Township, Tama County, Iowa. Mary was the daughter of Joseph J. and Mary B. (Kunch) Zmolek. She grew up in the Toledo area and graduated from Toledo High School with the Class of 1930. She attended Iowa State Teachers College in Cedar Falls. Upon receiving her teaching certificate, she resided in Toledo and taught in several rural schools for 11 years in Tama and Poweshiek counties. In 1947, she moved to Marshalltown, where she was a bookkeeper for several businesses before retiring in 1984 from Willard's Clothing Store. During her time in Marshalltown, Mary was an avid bowler and an active volunteer for St. Mary Catholic Church. She was a devoted visitor to all her family and friends during their hospital stays. She also enjoyed traveling and playing cards with family and friends. Most of all, she enjoyed her many nieces and nephews – most of whom live in the Tama-Toledo area. She was always a regular weekend visitor of these families; and, she cherished their companionship and sharing. Mary moved to Tama in 1990. She resided at Grandview Acres in Toledo the past four years. She was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama, and the C.C.W. Preceding her in death were her parents and eight brothers: Steve, Louis, Fred, George, Joseph, Adolph, Phillip and Emanuel and two sisters, Genevieve Skala and Helen Lyon.
