Wells, daughter of Willis and Elizabeth Kirkpatrick Wells, was born Sept. 6, 1860 on a farm near Eldorado. She spent her entire life in this vicinity. On Dec. 25, 1884 she married Jacob W. Tope, and to this union three children were born, Susie Tope Humphry, Glen and Hardy, all of whom preceded her in death. Her husband died in 1919. She lived on her farm in Dover township until about two years ago, when she moved to West Union. She has made her home with Mr. and Mrs. Guder Peterson since last March and died there Monday, Dec. 6, at the age of 83 years and 3 months. Surviving are two granddaughters, Mary Frances Tope Holtzman, Waterloo; and Irene Humphry Anderson, Ames; two great-grandchildren, one sister, Ellen, Sand Pedro, Cal.; one brother Hardy, Greybull, Wyo. [source: Fayette County Union (West Union, Iowa); 9 Dec 1943; page 1, column 3] ----- Mrs. Mary Tope, 83, died shortly after noon Monday at the Gunder Peterson home, where she had been living. Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday. Mrs. Tope had been in good health, and was able to be down town each day until her death. During the past few weeks she had complained of her head hurting, but was not considered seriously ill. On Monday she didn't appear for breakfast, and was not up again. Mrs. Tope spent most of her life on the farm northeast of the city, but for the past few years had resided in West Union, Iowa. Surviving are two granddaughters, Mrs. Harold Holtzman, Waterloo, and Mrs. Ralph Anderson, Ames; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Mrs. Allen Lee, in California; a brother, Hardy Wells, Grable, Wyo.; several nieces and nephews. Her husband, Jacob W. Tope, a son, and a daughter preceded her in death. She was a member of the Rebekah lodge, and had paid her dues for the coming year on Saturday.
