The cause of death was uremia. The funeral was held Wednesday morning from the late residence to the First Baptist church, where services were held at 10:30 o’clock. Dr. Wm. J. Coulston, the pastor, conducted the services and took for his text the 57th verse of the 15th chapter of Frist Corinthians. A quartette composed of Mrs. Lucy McPherson, Miss Rachel Nelson, R.A. Wilder and E.E. Ward with Mrs. Dan Reed accompanist, presiding at the organ, rendered the hymns, “Jesus Lover of My Soul,” and “Lead Kindly Light.” The pall bearers were Messrs. C.A. Osgood, Wm. Crowe Sr., Duncan Grant, W. A. Farrington, W.H. Crooks and R.T. Duckworth. The church was filled with old neighbors and friends who came to pay their last respects to one whom they knew and loved so well. Interment took place in the family lot in Linwood Park cemetery. Mary Alice Thayer was born on March 14, 1830, in Uxbridge, Massachusetts, and died January 12, 1914, in Boone, Iowa, at the advanced age of 83 years, 9 months and 28 days. She was the youngest daughter of a family of six daughters and two sons born to Royal and Hannah (Seagraves) Thayer, of whom there now remains only the younger brother, Royal Thayer,, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her early education was attained in the Uxbridge schools and in the Uxbridge academics, from which she was graduated in 1846. On August 25th, 1852, she was joined in wedlock with Nathan E. Goldthwait at the home of and by the Rev. S. B. Swain of the First Baptist church of Worchester, Massachusetts. Her husband, now her survivor, had just been graduated from Brown University Providence, Rhode Island, and for a number of years their residence was in Worchester and Uxbridge, where he pursued his calling as professor. In 1855 Prof and Mrs. Goldthwait felt the call of the expanding west and moved to La Crosse, Wisconsin, where the husband at first engaged in business. In 1859 they moved to Fox Lake, Wisconsin, where the former became president and the latter became instructor in music at Wisconsin Female College, now located in Milwaukee. In 1868 they moved to Boone, Iowa, which, with a slight exception, has been their residence ever since. In the year 1873-5 when Prof. Goldthwait was instructor in mathematics at Des Moines College, Des Moines, Mrs. Goldthwait held the chair of music in the same institution. The husband was the first superintendent of schools in Boone, and both became well known to the earlier residents, and have since kept up a wide acquaintance with the people of city and county. Three daughters and one son were born to this union, only the son, Stephen G., postmaster and editor of the News-Republican, surviving. Aside from the one living brother of the decedent, there remain as close relatives, Henry, Perry, and Stephen Goldthwait, of Uxbridge, brothers of the bereaved husband, one granddaughter, Marry, and W. M. Wheelock, of this city, a cousin in marriage. A large number of collateral relatives also survive to mourn her passing. Mrs. Goldthwait accepted the Christian faith very early in life and was since her young womanhood a devoted and consistent member of the Baptist faith. She was talented and charitable, cheerful and lovable, and made friends of all who came into her life. Her long career as a useful helpmeet was such as is seldom given a wife to enjoy, and the tie that is now broken was cemented by a rare affection and sympathy, of which naught can take the place. A life work well done, a burden laid down that was cheerfully carried, a memory of sweet disposition—these are the monuments which perpetuate her life indelibly in the minds of those who are called on to lay her away in sweet rest.
