Mary Alice Comer was born in 1918, in Mooresville, IN, the daughter of Dr. Jonathan E. Comer and Ethel Landers Comer. After graduating in 1936 from Mooresville High School, she enrolled in nursing school at Indianapolis City Hospital, completing her RN in 1939. Her first nursing position was working with her father in his private hospital in Mooresville. During this time, she became engaged to William Milner Carpenter, also a native of Mooresville, who was slated to graduate from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1940. In September 1941, she traveled to San Francisco to visit with Bill before his ship, the USS Oklahoma, departed for its permanent home base in Pearl Harbor, HI. Not wishing to be separated, they hopped a train for Reno, were quickly married and Mary followed Bill, arriving in Honolulu in late October, just six weeks before the December 7 Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. As a nurse, she was considered an "essential" worker and was not allowed to give up her job at the local children's hospital to return stateside until she became pregnant in early 1942. For the next 26 years, Mary followed her husband as he assumed duty stations in Annapolis, MD; San Francisco, CA; Washington, DC; Panama Canal Zone, Boston, MA; Newport, RI; Rochester, NY; and Sasebo, Japan. In many of those places she continued her work as a registered nurse, taking time off here and there to raise four children. In 1974, after Bill's retirement from the Navy, they moved to Aquia Harbor in Stafford, VA, where they lived for the next 32 years. For almost 20 of those years, Mary worked at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg and, following her retirement, she was a volunteer nurse with the local Hospice organization. Mary and her husband were founding members of Lake Ridge Baptist Church in Woodbridge, VA, where they continued as active members until Bill's death in 2006. Mary was at different times a Sunday school teacher, a nursery attendant, a vacation Bible school teacher and general volunteer for many of the church's programs. Mary also spent many years as a volunteer with a local homeless shelter (ACTS) and as a classroom helper in the Stafford public schools. In 2006, she relocated to Salisbury, to live with her daughter and long-time partner, where she joined Immanuel Baptist Church. "Grandma," as she was affectionately known, not only to her own grandchildren but also to the many exchange students who lived with her daughter in Salisbury, devoted much of her life and energy to programs for young people. She was always ready with advice, a friendly ear, a wry joke or a funny story from her past. Generous not only with her time, she supported many charitable causes and helped family members and friends through difficult times. Her final act of generosity was to donate her body to the Maryland Anatomy Board in the hope of furthering medical science. Mary Alice Comer Carpenter, 93, died Sunday, April 10, 2011, at her home in Salisbury. Mary was predeceased by her husband of 65 years, Bill, in 2006; a beloved granddaughter, Hilary Carpenter, in 2009; and a beloved sister, Ina Mae, in 2009. She is survived by her children, Dr. Richard Carpenter and wife, Buttons, of Fort Myers, FL; Katherine Sinclair of Indianapolis, IN; Suzanne McKeen and partner, David Bunting, of Salisbury, MD; John Carpenter and wife, Valerie, of Centennial, CO; grandchildren, Carolyn Crowley, Amy Johnson, Jeffrey Carpenter, Jennifer West, Ashton Asher, Tyler McKeen, Aya McKeen, Kristin Carpenter and Page Carpenter; five great-grandchildren, and many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews.
