Obituary from Glasco Sun, 3/14/1940: Alice Hill was born October 19 1852 near Athensville, Athens County, Ohio. When three years old she moved with her parents to Iowa, where she grew to womanhood. Later the family came to Lawrence, arriving there October 11, 1870. She was united in marraige to Stephen A. Nowels on July 18, 1871. To them were born three children, Guy S. Nowels and George W. Nowels of Glasco and Mary LaBertha Palmer of Lawrence. After having accepted the Lord, Jesus Christ as her savior she united with the Methodist Episcopal Church. Her membership later was with the First Presbyterian Church of Glasco. She passed away after a brief illness at the home of her daughter in Lawrence on March 4, 1940 at the age of 87 years. Those mourning her departure are: her two sons and one daughter; one sister, Mrs. Dolly Phillips of Beverly; one brother, Mr. Ray Hill of Greer, Idaho; fourteen grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren and many good friends. Funeral services were conducted Wednesday afternoon, March 7th from the Christian Church with Rev. Flood of Beverly preaching the service. Pallbearers were Wilbur Nowels, Guy Nowels, Jr., Jesse Martin, Clyde Russle, Charles Melton, and Max Martin. Relatives and friends from out of town to attend the last rites were Dr. and Mrs. W. R. Palmer of Lawrence, Mr. and Mrs. E.M. Phillips of Beverly, Mrs. and Mrs. C.N. Phillips and daughter Edith and Mrs. George Phillips and their son of Salina; Mrs. Bernice Kirby, Mrs. Mary Tocher, Mrs. McCurdy of Tescott; Miss Alta Nowels of Beloit, Mr. and Mrs. Charles Melton of Simpson and Mr. and Mrs. Joe Casata of Kansas City. Parents were: George W. & Ruth Hill Husband - Stephen Nowels Son - Guy Nowels Son - George Nowels Daughter - Mary Palmer
