The three were the only occupants of the car at the time the accident occurred. Mr. and Mrs. Anderson had been enjoying a visit from the latter's parents, Mr. and Mrs. David J. Jones of Murray, Iowa and had taken them in their auto to Guss where they were guests Sunday in the home of Mrs. Anderson's cousin, Mrs. Wm. Bell. Returning they left Mr. and Mrs. Jones at the station in Villisca and it was the latter' intention to take No. 2 home. As it was late in the afternoon and looked like rain, Mr. and Mrs. Anderson decided to hurry on home and left Mr. and Mrs. Jones at the station. Mr. Anderson, who is usually a very careful driver, was going at the rate of about thirty miles an hour and was passing the S. A. Jenkins farm, going north, when he noticed a Scotch collie dog in the road. He says he was going too fast to turn out and concluded to run over the dog. The dog must have dodged, however, for he showed no marks of having been hit after the accident. At this point, in his effort to guide the car, Mr. Anderson ran it up on the bank at the right side of the road, and as he brought it back into the road again, the suddenness of the turn, together with the fact that one front wheel plowed deep into the blue grass sod on the bank, caused the car to lunge forward onto its left side, the momentum immediately carrying the rear end forward and righting the car on its wheels. Mrs. Anderson, who was in the tonneau, was thrown from her seat, but whether she fell under the car and was struck by it or not will never be known. The car was standing on its wheels, headed to the south, in an exactly opposite direction from what it had been going. Mrs. Anderson lay in the road just in front, and to the south of the car. Mr. Anderson and the boy were thrown clear and both were able to get up of their own accord. Mrs. Anderson's neck was broken and her skull badly crushed. She was dead when friends reached her side. The accident was witnessed by Mrs. S. A. Jenkins and her sister, Mrs. E. J. Chatterton, who were sitting on the porch just a few rods south of where the accident took place. Robert Hyde, who was in his car going north also saw the accident and with Mr. and Mrs. Ed Enarson, Mrs. Jenkins, Mrs. Baker, and Mrs. Chatterson, carried the dead woman to the Jenkins home, where word was sent to Villisca. Mr. and Mrs. Jones were notified, and the shock to them was almost more than either could endure. Both are old people an feeble, and had just left their daughter in health and happiness, only to receive word a few minutes later that she was dead. Physicians went to the scene of the accident immediately and an examination of Mr. Anderson's injuries showed no bones broken. It was impossible to embalm Mrs. Anderson, owing to the apertures in the skull, and the further fact that both ear drums were broken. For this reason it was necessary to hold the funeral Monday afternoon. The car, which was a Ford, was not badly damaged, and a representative of the company, who called at the Jenkins home after the accident, said it could be repaired for $50 to $75. The wind shield was broken, the left side of the radiator was jammed, the left lamp was broken, and the left fender bent. The right rear tire was deflated, but whether made so in the accident or before is not known. The car was run into the Jenkins barn with its own power. Mr. and Mrs. Carl C. Anderson lived on the old Pratt Mayhew farm of 120 acres a mile south and a half mile west of Holmes Chapel. They had just finished paying for it a few days before Mrs. Anderson's untimely end. Mrs. leaves a husband and five children, four girls and one boy, and they will continue to make their home there. In addition to the physical pain he endures, Mr. Anderson is completely broken up with grief over his wife's terrible death and it was difficult for him to talk about the accident. He stated that he thought he was driving about twenty-five miles an hour when he saw the dog in the road. He had not time to turn, he says and believed he struck the dog, with the result that his car was thrown to the right up on the east bank of the road. He remembers bring it back into the road again and then he lost control. Robert Gourley, who was following immediately behind in his car, says his speedometer register 23 miles an hour, and that Mr. Anderson, who passed him on the road, must have been going 25 to 30 miles an hour when the accident happened. The road was in splendid condition; there was no mud, and the rate was not excessive under usual conditions. That the dog caused the accident indirectly no one denies. That the dog was to blame for it is denied. Mr. Jenkins, to whom the dog belonged, said his little son, Sterling and niece Ruth Jenkins, had gone up to the home of Mr. and Mrs. W. J. McPherrin, and that, as is usual when the children go away, the dog had gone out into the road to watch and wait for them. The dog never ran out at passing autos or vehicles, and was not making any demonstration when Mr. and Mrs. Anderson came by. He never barked and appeared not to have been struck by the car at all. The accident is one of the most regrettable in the history of Montgomery County, for Mr. and Mrs. Anderson were highly esteemed people and her death, sudden as it was, has cast a gloom over the entire community. Mary Alice Jones, was born near Osceola, in Clark County, Iowa, March 25, 1878, and the eldest daughter of Mr. and Mrs. David J. Jones, who live at Murray. She was married August 17, 1897, to Mr. Carl C. Anderson, the ceremony taking place at Red Oak, this county. She had living in Montgomery County 15 years, and she and Mr. Anderson purchased the Pratt Mayhew farm n 1903, where they have since made their home. Her children are; Edna, age 16; Ethel, age 13; Ruby, age 11; Grace, age 8, and Glendon, age 6. Mrs. Anderson also has six brothers and two sisters, and all except one sisters, were present at the funeral. Mrs. Anderson united with the Christian Church at the age of twelve years and about five years ago transferred her membership to the Holmes Chapel M. E. Church and was among its most active workers. She was also a member of the Ladies Aide Society, and her work and influence for good was felt in every line of church endeavor. Mrs. Anderson was one among hundreds and her kindly ways and numerous good qualities were appreciated by all who knew her. Her death at any time and under any circumstances would be a serious loss to the community, but particularly so at this time and in the manner of its happening. The funeral services held Monday afternoon at three o'clock were attended by a large crowd, attesting to her worth and the regard in which she was held. No attempt was made to remove the body to her home, and a short prayer services was held at the S. A. Jenkins home by Rev. E. S. Menoher, pastor of the M. E. Church in Villisca. Other services were held at the Holmes Chapel, conducted by Rev. C. F. Smith, pastor of the M. E. Church at Grant, and interment was in the Arlington Cemetery.
