Description	:	MARY ALICE PARKER SIKES (1876-1909) was born in Albemarle, Stanly County, North Carolina, the first of five children, to Doctor Franklin Parker, a successful farmer, and his wife Hettie Belle Harris Parker. She received her education in the schools of Albemarle and Stanly County. At the age of eighteen, in 1894, she married Mr. Vann Sikes of neighboring Union County, North Carolina. Read More	MARY ALICE PARKER SIKES (1876-1909) was born in Albemarle, Stanly County, North Carolina, the first of five children, to Doctor Franklin Parker, a successful farmer, and his wife Hettie Belle Harris Parker. She received her education in the schools of Albemarle and Stanly County. At the age of eighteen, in 1894, she married Mr. Vann Sikes of neighboring Union County, North Carolina. After several years’ residence at Sikes Mill, on Rocky River in upper Union County, the young couple moved to Monroe in 1902 to make their home. Mary Alice and Vann Sikes were the parents of six children: Maude Vernon in 1896, Claudia Belle in 1898, Frank Homer in 1899, Hannah in 1901, Jocelyn Cheshire in 1902 and Arnold Culpepper in 1907. On October 17, 1909, at the age of 33, Alice Parker Sikes died at her home in Monroe. The Monroe Journal of October 19 reported, “She had been ill with typhoid fever some time and the weakness of her heart caused a fatal termination. Her death is particularly sad, since she leaves five children, the smallest but two years old, and possessed all the hopes and ambitions of a young mother with a devoted husband, young children and a happy home about her… She was a member of the Methodist church since childhood,” the Journal continued, “and was a woman of fine Christian character, highly esteemed by all who knew her. She was devoted to the welfare of her husband and children, and in their great loss they have the heartfelt sympathy of all.” Friends and relatives remembered her as a beautiful young woman with a winning, outgoing personality. One can only wonder what her life would have been had she not been taken so early. Nevertheless, despite her destiny, she left a good name and wonderful legacy to her children, grandchildren and their descendants, in which there is much for them to be proud. “Let not your hearts be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me.” St. John 14:1 Written and contributed by Robert Allison Ragan, her grandson.
