Peterson December 23, 2014 12:00 am SIOUX CITY \| Mary Aloysia (Corey) Peterson of New Braunfels, Texas, formerly of Sioux City passed away on Dec. 20, 2014 in New Braunfels. Dec. 21st would have been Mary's 84th birthday, she was in good spirits. Services will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 2, at St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in New Braunfels, with the Rev. Anthony Pesek officiating. Cremation and graveside services will take place at a later date. Visitation will be 9 to 10 a.m. Friday, Jan, 2, with a rosary at 10 a.m., at the church. Arrangements are under the direction of Doeppenschmidt Funeral Home in New Braunfels. Mary has lived a long and fruitful life focused on helping others. Mary was born in Beresford S.D., on Dec. 21, 1930, to Mary Agnes (O'Rielly) Corey and Clifford Myron Corey. Mary was raised in her early years on her father's ranch in Wendt S.D. and moved to Beresford, where she graduated from high school in 1948. At age 17, Mary began teaching school in one-room school houses in the Alcester S.D. area. She attended the University of South Dakota in Vermillion receiving a college degree in education in 1971. Mary married Gerald N. Peterson of Gayville S.D. on June 18,1951. Mary taught school in Sioux City for the Catholic Diocese and the Sioux City Public School System. Mary also volunteered to place foreign exchange students in homes around the Sioux City area for Youth for Understanding and was the first area representative for American Intercultural Student Exchange and had her friend President Ronald Reagan be the spokesperson for the Public Service Announcements. Mary placed several thousand exchange students in homes throughout the Sioux City area, and took annual trips with many of them as a tour guide. She felt it was her duty to be an ambassador to others for the United States. The children always called her "Mom Pete." In her retirement years, Mary and Jerry moved to New Braunfels Texas to enjoy the warm weather and be closer to grandchildren. Mary and Jerry traveled throughout the globe visiting children whom she had placed in years past. Mary was a former Regent of Catholic Daughters for her parish, and was active in many other groups, clubs and foundations. She worked on several political campaigns for Governor Robert Ray, Congressmen Berkley Bedell and Fred Grandy. All of them called her a friend and a great help. Mary is survived by her husband, Gerald Peterson; five children, Michael G. Peterson and wife, Carol of Hermosa S.D., Robert J. Peterson and wife, Susan of Rockwall Texas, Antoinette K. (Peterson) Erickson and husband, John of Lincoln Neb., Timothy C. Peterson and wife, Wendy of Atlanta Ga., and Thomas C. Peterson and wife, Claudia of Hutto Texas; 14 grandchildren, Aaron Peterson, Sean Peterson, Samantha Christoffersen, Nicholas Peterson, Briana Peterson, Braden Peterson, Rebecca White, Kathleen Logsdon, Michelle Erickson, Phoebe Peterson, Caroline Peterson, Zachary Peterson, Sabrina Schnack, and Newman Peterson; four great-grandchildren, Arabella Peterson, Zerek Peterson, Augustus Peterson, and Sawyer White; her brother, Robert Corey of Sioux Falls, S.D.; and her sister, Barbara Hoffmann of Winston, Ore.
