In 1860, Jacob was 33, Hettie 31, and the family lived in Pike Township, Muscatine County, Iowa. Allie (8), Susan H (6), John (3), Ellie (2) and Mary A (4 months) In 1878, Mary Ann was 18 when she married Olof Remington, a Swedish farmer. Olof was a naturalized US citizen, born about 1848. By 1885, Mary Ann's father, Jacob Black, was gone. Mary Ann and Olof were farming in Grant Township, Washington County, Nebraska. The household was large. There were three children (Rosa (6), Frank W (2) and baby Elmer(Earl?--census records differed in spelling), and Olof's parents, Nelsen (78) and Mary (75) Remington, and Mary Ann's mother, Hettie Black (56) living in the household. In 1900, Mary Ann & Olof had moved to a different farm in Arizona township, Burt County, Nebraska. Mary Ann was listed as "Marg", Olof was listed as "O M" and besides Mary Ann's mother Hattie, there were the children: Mary A Remington (19), Frank W (17, a farm laborer), and Carl E (15, at school) Minnie E (13, at school), and Elmer J (11, at school). Mary Ann told the Census taker that she had 6 children, of which 5 were living. It was somewhat unusual in farming communities for children to go to school past 8th grade, and Mary Ann herself only went as far as 5th grade. Schooling was important to Olof and Mary Ann, so their children were in school. Minnie E later became a public school teacher. Elmer J later became a physician. Hettie died in 1915, but the Census for 1910 shows only Olaf (62), Mary Ann (50), and 2 children, Minnie E (23; a school teacher in a public school) and Elmer J (21; working on the home farm). Perhaps Hattie was living with another child. In 1910 Olaf was a livestock farmer, and their home was in or near Tekamah, Nebraska. The 1930 Census shows Mary Ann as widowed, living near Tekamah, with her daughter Mary A and her son-in-law, George B. McGuire. The McGuires were farmers. By 1940, Mary Ann was living alone in a house in Tekamah, Nebraska, where she had been living since at least 1935. Mary Ann Remington died in 1949. She was buried in Tekamah Cemetery, next to her mother, Hettie Black.∼Wife of Olaf Nils Remington, married Feb 26, 1878, mother of: 1. Rose May Remington, born February 20, 1879; died August 09, 1888. 2. Mary Ann Remington, born December 07, 1880; married George B. Mcguire September 14, 1904 3. Frank William Remington, born March 24, 1883; married Caddie Deaver September 18, 1907. 4. Carl Edwin Remington, born February 01, 1885 in Blair Washington Co. Nebraska; died July 06, 1956 in Lewistown, Montana; married Clara Marguerite Bratley October 07, 1903. 5. Minnie Ester Remington, born March 13, 1887; married Willis Brown Allen April 05, 1939. 6. Elmer James Remington, born April 15, 1889; died April 26, 1937 in Goodland, Kansas; married Viola W. McKinnis August 12, 1917. As of the 1940 census, Mary was 80 years old, living in Tekemah, Burt, Nebraska.
