Funeral services were held at the M.E. church on Tuesday afternoon, conducted by Dr. J.L. Patterson. Mary Ann Cramer was born in Clermont County, Ohio [on] February 11, 1829. At the age of 17 years she was married to Joseph Murphy, and 10 children - were born to the union, eight of whom live to mourn her death. Her husband died in Ohio 25 years ago, and in 1885, with several of her children, she came to Kansas. She owned a farm for many years east of this city where she resided until about seven years ago when her house was destroyed by fire. Since that time she has lived with her daughters in Medicine Lodge. Her surviving children are Thos. Murphy, Mrs. J.H. Minick, Mrs. J.G. Clayton, Mrs. J.C. Walstad of this place; John Murphy, Pawpaw, Indian Territory; William Murphy, Blaine County, Oklahoma; Mrs. A. Schmidt, St. Louis, Missouri; Adam Murphy, Maquon, Illinois; the latter being the only one who could not attend the funeral. She is also survived by two sisters and four brothers. Two of the brothers, Mahlia Cramer, of this place, and Wm. Cramer, of Washington, were present at the funeral. Grandmother Murphy was well known to Medicine Lodge and Barber County people and all who enjoyed her acquaintance loved her. Surrounding her casket and bidding her a last and final farewell three generations were represented - children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren all mingling tears of sorrow over one whose love and tender affections they had so often shared. She was 75 years, 9 months and 3 days of age. She was converted at an early age and was a beloved member of the Methodist Church. Thus again we are brought to realize the uncertainty of life and the certainty of death. May the comforter come to those whose hearts are heavy and may all strive to live such a good purpose as this beloved old lady.
