Description	:	Mary Ann Crecelius was the first of nine children of John Godhard Crecelius & Diana Wilson. She was named after her maternal grandmother, Mary Ann Tye Wilson. The younger Mary Ann married on August 22, 1838, in Harrison County, Indiana, to John H. Bottles; 2 children: Henry and Manerva. John's only unmarried daughter, Phebe Crecelius, had been keeping house for him. His four unmarried sons were also still at home, as was his eldest daughter Mary Bottles and her two young children, Henry & Manerva---nine people under one roof. But with the addition of a stepmother who wasn't much older than some of her stepchildren, the Crecelius farmhome must have suddenly seemed very crowded. Within nine months of John & Nancy's "May-December" marriage, all six of the adult Crecelius children had left the parental home. Phebe, a 30-year-old spinster, married Andrew Jackson Melton, a neighbor who was nine years her junior. David Wilson Crecelius married Crety Sophia Curts, 12 years his junior. George Crecelius married Elizabeth Keller, nine months his senior. Even John's two youngest sons, bachelors Adam and Harrison Crecelius, left home and joined their siblings in the westward migration to the fertile virgin prairies of central Iowa. Eldest daughter Mary Ann Bottles now went by the surname Bartles. The 1856 census of Grundy County, Iowa, lists seven Crecelius siblings & their families living side by side on the prairie, near Wolf Creek (The settlement would later be named Conrad.): Mahala with husband John W. Conrad & 6 children Adam Crecelius Mary Crecelius Bartles & her 2 children Harrison Crecelius David Crecelius with his wife & 2 sons George Crecelius with his wife & 2 sons Phebe with husband Andrew J. Melton & 2 daughters 25 family members in all. And of course more children were born in the ensuing years. Mary's brother Adam provided a home for her & her two children. In the 1860 census, the four are living in Trail Creek Township, Harrison County, Missouri. Adam & Henry are both farmers. During the Civil War, Adam served in the Missouri Cavalry. The 1870 census finds Mary, Manerva, & Adam in Salem Township, Daviess County, Missouri. Nearby lives Mary's son, Henry Bartles (1839-1923), who had married about 1866 to a Missouri girl named Mary E. (1841-1923); they have two daughters: Sarepta Belle "Belle" & Manerva R. Born 1870 in Missouri, Manerva died before 1900 in Texas. Her sister Belle married Zebediah Page & had five children. Two died young, before 1900; the other three---a girl & two boys: Effie E. Page 1888-1959; Tracy Lee Page 1889-1946; & Archie Roziah Page 1891-1980. Effie married Edgar Baker; they were living in Enid, Oklahoma, in 1940. Adam Crecelius, Mary Ann Bartles, & her daughter Manerva returned to Conrad, Iowa, & lived in Adam's modest house on the west edge of Conrad, on the south side of Center Street. All three are buried in the same plot in Conrad cemetery.
