Mary Ann Cross, daughter of Levi and Elizabeth PRICE Cross, was born Feb. 4, 1835, near the town of Pike, in Pike county, Ohio, and died at letts, Jan.8, 1927, aged 91 years, 11 months and 5 days. She had lived a beautiful life of service to her Master and of usefulness and affection to a large family and host of friends and relatives. She came to this state with her parents, traveling by the time-honored, horse-drawn covered wagon, they arriving on Sept.15, 1846. They settled near the Cedar River in Lake township, close to what is now known as the white bridge. This site was chosen because it afforded the necessary fuel and lumber so essential to the pioneers. Her interest in political and religious matters was remarkable and at the time of her death she had been a reader of the Religious Telescope for 55 years. Early in life she joined the United Brethren church and always had been a faithful member. She was married on Dec. 1, 1854, to JOHN W. Shellabarger. They established their home in Cedar township, Muscatine county, where their family was reared, living there until March 1, 1901, when they moved to Letts. Mr. Shellabarger died Feb. 16, 1916. Nine children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Shellabarger, seven of whom are living, Mrs. Elizabeth HIDLEBAUGH of Redverse, Canada, Mrs. Emma ELLIS, Mrs. Frances ELIASON, Mrs. Jetta TURKINGTON, MARTIN and WALTER Shellabarger of Letts, and WILLIAM Shellabarger of Muscatine. Mrs. Catherine PACE died Dec. 3, 1924, and Mrs. Clara ELDER died March 11, 1925. She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. Hannah E. Eberling of Muscatine, 28 grandchildren and 43 great-grandchildren.
