They had ten children. They remained there until 1881 when they traveled west to the Flathead Valley in Montana. They were among the first settlers of what would become Sedan, Montana. They remained there about two years, but returned to Chautauqua County, Kansas where they stayed for around a year. In the spring of 1885, the family decided to return to Montana. On April 20, they had arrived and made camp at Medicine Lodge, Kansas. That evening, a severe storm brought torrential rains that pour down for several hours without letting up. Streams around Medicine Lodge quickly rose and a raging flood washed through the low lying valleys around Medicine Lodge. The Maddox family was caught by surprise by the rapidly rising waters. They made effort to brace their wagons against trees but to no avail. While some of the family managed to climb into the trees safely above the flood waters, others were swept away with the wagons. Dawn and the subsiding flood waters would reveal the tragic reality that the mother, Mary Ann, sons William, Henry and James, and daughters Adaline and Laura had perished in the flash flood. The bodies were laid to rest in the cemetery at Medicine Lodge. The surviving members of the Maddox family would return to Montana where they would stay the rest of their lives.
