Umhoefer, a highly respected resident of Anthon since 1910. Mrs. Umhoefer had been in a coma since she suffered a stroke Saturday evening, August 29, and she passed away peacefully at 11 a.m. Friday in her home here at the age of 72 years and 10 days. Her demise came as a blow to relatives and a host of friends, who will miss her beyond words. Mary Ann Liffring was born at St. Anna, Calumet Co., Wisconsin on August 24, 1864, and resided in her native state until 1875 when she came to Cherokee, Iowa, with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Dominic Liffring It was at Cherokee that she met J.J. Umhoefer, whose bride she became November 29, 1884. The ceremony was performed in Storm Lake. Mr. and Mrs. Umhoefer engaged in farming near Cherokee until 1890 when they purchased a general store at Alvord, Lyon Co., Iowa. They resided at Alvord until 1907, when they moved to LeMars, where Mr. Umhoefer operated a variety store for three years. In 1910 they moved to Anthon and have made their home here since, Mr. Umhoefer being engaged in business here. In 1934 they had the pleasure of celebrating their golden wedding anniversary. Eight children were born to them, and six survive their mother. A daughter died in infancy and a son, Frank Umhoefer, passed away in 1931. The living children are Mrs. James (Josephine) Bernard, Miss Mayme and Clarence of Anthon; Irwin of St. Louis, Missouri; LeRoy of Remsen and Joseph of New York City. In addition to her husband she is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Josephine Pierce of Lima, Ohio; and Mrs. Emma Morse of Wenatchee, Washington; and seven brothers, Thomas Liffring of Cherokee, John D. and Frederick Liffring of Waterloo; William, Louis and Edward Liffring of Toledo, Ohio; and Eugene Liffring of Mansfield, Ohio. One brother, James, preceded her in death. Mrs. Umhoefer was the eldest of a family of eleven children. Funeral services were conducted at 9:30 a.m. Monday in St. Joseph's Catholic Church at Anthon, the Rev. Fr. D.K. Hurley, celebrating requiem mass. Burial, under direction of Hudgel's Funeral Service, was in Mt. St. Joseph's Cemetery.
