Description	:	Wife of T. D. Nance. T. D. (listed as Thomas) and Mary can be found on the 1850 census, living in Newberry County, South Carolina. He was a 29 year old shoemaker and she was 26 years old. At that time they had 3 children Mary J. at 9 years old, Margret at 5 years old, and James as 1 year old. He was a 29 year old shoemaker and she was 26 years old. At that time they had 3 children Mary J. at 9 years old, Margret at 5 years old, and James as 1 year old. By the time of the 1880 census, the family (less T.D.) was living in the Maybinton community of Newberry County, South Carolina. Mary Ann was listed as 55 years old. Still living in the home were her daughters; Carrie Nance age 27, Lucy K .(Kinner) Nance age 24, Sarah M. Nance age 22, and son Willie I. Nance age 19. She lists her father as being born in Ireland. T.D. Nance's Military record states that he enlisted in the Confederate Army at the Union Court House in August of 1863. He was listed as a Private In A Company of the Palmetto Sharp Shooters. T.D. Nance was listed among the casualties as killed on May 6, 1864 in the Battle of the Wilderness. He was still serving as a Private, in Company A of the 1st Palmetto Sharpshooters, Jenkins Regiment, part of Bratton's Brigade. His burial site is unknown but, believed to be near the location of the battle. Although I am unable to confirm it at this time, I believe this Nance family to be related to the Nance family that owned a plantation near Henderson's Island on the Broad River. This plantation was a short distance from the Maybinton community (less than a mile). The property is now owned by the United States Forestry Service. There is a family cemetery on the property and I have visited the site. So far I have found 4 grave markers and one tombstone. The stone is for L.A.G. (could be a C.) Nance who died July 20 1816 aged 6 years, 5 months, and 17 days. The other markers show no names or dates.
