Wachtler, 59, of 631 Pershing avenue, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hayes Brownlee. Born December 7, 1863, in County Carlow, Ireland, she was the daughter of Michael and Anna O’Brien. She was married April 29, 1891, to Edward Watchtler. She had been a resident of Ottumwa for the past 84 years. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Hayes Brownlee of Ottumwa; one son, Brig. Gen. W.A. Wachtler of Washington, D.C., and three grandsons, William Wachtler of Roswell, N.M., and Kenneth and Daniel Brownlee, both of Ottumwa. “WACHTLER SERVICES,” From “Ottumwa Courier,” January 5, 1953: Funeral services for Mrs. Mary A. Wachtler, 89, of 631 Pershing avenue, who died Thursday at 10:50 p.m. at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Hayes Brownlee, will be held Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. at the Traul funeral home and at 9 a.m. at the St. Mary’s Catholic church. A requiem high mass will be celebrated by Rev. Father Welsh, assistant pastor. Members of the St. Mary’s parish and friends will meet at the Traul funeral home Monday evening at 8 o’clock to recite the Rosary. Surviving in addition to those mentioned previously, are one brother, Ed O’Brien of Salt Lake City, Utah, and one sister, Mrs. Kate Toombs of Pocatello, Idaho. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Pallbearers will be Martin O’Hara, William McInerney, A.J. Schwartz, Joe Verbulat, George Smith, and Dan Larson [?-not sure of Dan’s last name; it is blurred in obit.]
