Born on June 8, 1925, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, she was the daughter of Anton and Julia (Zeman) Parizek. Mary Ann graduated from Tama High School in 1944. On December 14, 1947, she married to George Tichy. In the mid 1950's, they built their home in Le Grand where they raised their four children. Upon retirement they enjoyed wintering in Texas. In 2008, after George's death, Mary Ann enjoyed life at the Embers Retirement Community. Mary Ann was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church. Her faith was important to her and sustained her through difficult times. While living in Le Grand, she was also a member of Birthday Club, Lioness Club and Cro-Knit Club. During the summers, she spent many hours gardening and canning fruits and vegetables for the family. George and Mary Ann enjoyed square dancing in their earlier years and Mary Ann sewed much of the clothing that they wore. Mary Ann attended ceramic classes for several years and gifted friends and family with many of her creations. Watching sports on television was a favorite pastime - college football and basketball and major league baseball. She had a special affection for the Iowa Hawkeyes but was a fan of many teams and delighted in sharing game highlights with her grandchildren. Mary Ann will be missed by her four children, Pam (Larry) Walden, Jim (Scherry) Tichy, Jerry (Teresa) Tichy all of Marshalltown, and Cathy Underhill of Le Grand; nine grandchildren, Shane (Jennifer Gushue) Tichy, Julie (Rob) McCaughey, Alissa (Brad) Walters, Chad (Amanda) Underhill, Shelly (Brian Jones) Posadas, Lisa (Joel) Schmidt, Sarah (Corey) Dickmeyer, Serena Tichy, and Jared (Armela) Tichy; 17 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, George in 2005; son-in-law Lenny Underhill in 2009; her parents; two brothers, Melvin and Paul Parizek; and two sisters, Virginia Werner and Barbara Prusha. Mary Ann's family would like to thank the priests and lay ministers of St. Francis for their spiritual guidance and visits while she was a resident of the Embers.
